Which .25?

The 25 calibers I have the most personal experience with is the .257 Roberts and the .250 Savage. both would make great lightweight carrying hunting rifles and both are extremely accurate with 75-100 grain bullets. Both are superb deer/bear/antelope cartridges with the 100 gr. bullets and excellent varmint cartridges with the 75 and 87 gr. bullets. I have good results with IMR 4064 and IMR 4350 in the .257 Roberts and IMR 3031 in the .250 Savage. If you go the 25-06 route and were worrying about brass, you could simply neck down 30-06 brass.
Necessitates a long action but that could be a bonus as the throat extends. The '06 brass is fairly ubiquitous.

If you were building a new rifle in 25 caliber for hunting and occasional target shooting, which one would it be and why? I'm in western NC so extreme ranges aren't likely but I would like to have the option to shoot the longer heavier bullets but probably would not purpose build it for one particular bullet. I like speed so I am thinking 100-115 grain bullets for the most part but I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks!
Lots of opinions here. Doesn't sound like your in a "Go big or go home" scenario. Your not asking for much based on your requirement. Look at a 25CM or 257 Roberts. Both get it done easily and if you'll be looking at the heavier 130 grain bullets, get the 7.25 twist barrel. That barrel will still do great with the 110-115 grain bullets. Good luck

I've got a 25_06 and live in Maine where a 50 yard Hunting shot is more likely than a 200 yd shot. So I don't need distance.'m a reloader too.Accuracy is the first concern. And I certainly can make the 06 sing
Now I want a 257 Roberts, for no apparent need just don't have one, yet.
I have 2 257 roberts, both ruger 77's. One's a Hawkeye, the other is a 1972 flattop with open sights. The flattop made its way to my house in iowa from New York. Apparently, it either wasn't hunted with much, or was very well taken care of. Either way, I'm gonna show it some love this year and take it to Michigan deer hunting, just as it is, open sights and all. Now if I could find me a Ruger 77, 200th year in 257 Roberts, I'd be a happy camper.

I have had 4 different .257" caliber rifles.

Two built before the fast twist and heavies were around.
.250AI (.250-3000 Ack Imp 40°) pushing a 100SMK/100TSX @ 3100 or 115 HVLD @ 3050. Killed a few deer, javalina, and a coyote at 1327 with it.
.25-06AI pushing a 115 HVLD @ 3450 or 100TTSX @ 3600. Killed a bunch of deer with it. 800 rounds are barrel was toast.

I now have two fast twist rifles to push the heavies. These are a gamechanger now.
25 Creedmoor pushing a 135 Hyb @ 2975fps. I but it to be a alR steel rifle, but woukd have no problem shooting deer with it.
25SST (Serman Short Tactical) pushing all 3 of the heavies. 131 BJ @ 3126 (had them up to 3350+), 135 Hyb @ 3127, and 133 Elite @ 3199 (had them up to 3365). We have killed a few pronghorn with them at 331 (131BJ) and 875 (135 Hyb). I hope to put another down with the 133 Elite this year.

How does that 135 perform on game at that half mile range ?

I like anything built off that .308 case. Accuracy is inherent, capacity adequate with medium burn rate powders - Varget/ 4064. Should be a winner.

I really like my 25-284 with the 131 BJ. Runs them at 3160 FPS with R26 out of a 24" barrel.
