I own a few to choose from, and I think any will get the job done. Just depends on the style of the hunt I've got planned. I primarily hunt elk, and love .338 caliber bullets.

My ultralight pack rifle is a 338-300wsm on a Model70 short action, bell and carlson stock, Leupold VX3. Weighs a couple onces over 7 lbs, and it shoots the 210 TTSX like you wouldn't believe. If the goal is ultra light, I'll choose this rifle.

I think the most practical all around long range rifle for any animal in America is a 300 win mag. I've got a custom built 300, McMillan A3 Edge, and shoot 215 Berger Hybrids.

But sometimes practical gets boring. So If I had to choose 1 rifle, it would be my custom 338 RUM, ATACR, McMillan Game Scout Edge and the Berger 250 grain Elite Hunter.

Overall, it's nice to have options, and a backup if something goes wrong.

Ruger M77 7rem, Leupold VX3 6.5-20X50 slinging 168 Berger VLD soon as I get a legal moose in range I'll updated you guys...lol

Well I did get my new gun and I can't be happier. I picked up a ULA in 7 rem mag that had some custom cerakote job on the stock and barrel/action, topped it of with a Viper 2.5-10x42 and a atlas bipod. What a incredibly light tack driver ;) gun)

Pack a 338 NM, shoot antelope, deer, elk, bear, moose and hopefully more.Defiance, with ABS 26'' braked.Lonewolf summit. Rifle bare 7-2 oz. 83/4 dressed w/ Leo mark 4 mil 6.5-20x50 on a pinned rail. Supported by an Atlas. In picture my outdoorsman tripod is rear support, son pictured is now double expert in Marines

I have two rifles for LR hunting. My go to rifle for several years is a Cooper 52, 6.5-284, braked and fluted #5 barrel, 5-20 Huskemaw scope, Harris Bipod(last year I converted tp an Atlas), 4x5" rear poly bag. Loaded with 140 VLD's at 2970FPS. Weight 10.5#.
I also have a 300WM, Rem 700 Milspec, 24" barrel w/Elk Meadow brake, bedded McMillan A3, Timney trigger, NF 5.5-22 G7 scope, Atlas bipod.4x5rear bag. Loaded with 210 Berger/LRAB at 2900FPS. Weight 13.5#.

I'm interested to know what you guys are lugging or not lugging around in the hills !
And what are you targeting with your chosen round ?
And what does it weigh ?

Also what would be your choice if you had to narrow it down to one gun to take a Bear, mule deer, elk, and a jackalope with that one gun ????

PS - Jackalope does not need to be distinguishable after the shot ;-)

Actually with just the criteria you've given... I think I'd take my M1A 7.62x51mm NATO with Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40 mm MR/T M3 scope illuminated reticle, the load 165gr GK or 168gr VLD hunter, set to the ballistic cam.
Game? pretty much whatever steps out.
15 bls loaded.

The rifle with 168gr Mk's is pretty much 1/2 to 3/4 moa all day long.

Just my pick.
