What do you think of the 6.5 WBY RPM ?

Rebated Precision Magnum , heck of a name isn't it ? Cool part about it (or maybe downside), is it uses the .473" bolt face, and can be built on about any long action. Also utilizes the 3.34" COAL.

IMO I think the 6.5/.264" class is too "busy" right now. I believe this would have been a good chance to make a fine, new 6.25mm. Unless I've missed something, the last new .25" was the WSSM.

So what do you guys think of it as it stands, and do you think my idea would have been better? Maybe even a .277", and call it the 6.8 JOM (Jack O'connor Magnum)?

Well at least you agree with me that it would have been better as a .257 or .270. I'm going to see what Weatherby would think.

I think it's one of the "smarter" cartridge designs. I've wanted a 6.5-284 for a long time but don't want to short myself by putting it in a short action but feel like I'm leaving quite a bit of wasted space by putting it in a long action. The tapers of the cases based off of 30-06 leave a fair amount of wasted space also. There are a lot of wildcats that solve these problems but I have a hard time on spending $200 on dies and then still have to do an extravagant procedure to form brass.
Hopefully this takes off in other calibers soon and there is good brass availability!

I believe it would make a very efficient 7mm, close to the Rem Mag performance with less powder used.

Might match 7mm Rem Mag or even exceed it. The 280 AI is pretty much right there and the RPM should have a little more. Too bad I spent so much on dies and brass for my 7 Dakota.

A fast twist 25 would be pretty fun as well as going up to 8mm or 338.

The 257 and 277 are never going to compete side by side with 6.5 or 7mm because the high bc bullet selection sucks and always will because most people understand the 6.5 and 7 are better. I personally can not understand why people will try to argue with this. If bc does not matter to you than I would assume you are not shooting long distance in which case the cartridge or caliber you shoot makes absolutely zero difference. While I can absolutely appreciate the desire to play with weird stuff my statement has been true for at least the last 10-15 years during the explosion of higher bc bullets.

To the op I am not sure we needed another 6.5 RPM thread.

With less powder used, you would have 7mm Rem Mag performance with even less recoil. This could be a huge opportunity for a lot of folks to build Magnum performance rifles on .473" bolt faces.

Definitely not better as a quarter bore. It will take a hand loader 7 twist barrel and some 131 ace to make a 25 rpm run with the 26 rpm.
This case is screaming to be wild cated though, I'm thinking 7mm and 143 hammer or 145 lrx as a dedicated California rifle(were forced to shoot lead free now)

I'm reading case capacity right around 80ish grained? Has a 284" neck which would make it a good wildcat parent 7mm and on down. I personally like the 7mm blaser better however, a little more case capacity but a 315" neck length. I'll be interested to see what this case really does in the hands of reloaders. The 4.9# rifle w/ Magnum performance for $3k is driving a solid bargain though.
