What cartridge?

100 gr. Speer .243 BC .430 SD =.242
110 gr Sierra MK .243 BC .617 SD =.266
100 gr Sierra 7mm BC .319 SD =.195
110 gr Hondaty .308 BC .256 SD =.166

So, for approximately the same bullet weight/recoil, a .243 has a higher Sectional Density and Ballistic Coefficient. To beat the Match King BC in a .308, you'd have to shoot a 210 gr. Berger VLD.

The Speer .243 loaded to 2960 fps has 1036 Ft-lb of energy at 400 yards. Plenty for deer or black bear, or hogs.

The Horndady .308 loaded to 3300 fps has 819 ft-lbs of energy. Still enough, but more recoil.

The best way to achieve lighter recoil is to shoot smaller diameter bullets.

18" 308 driving a 130 Barnes TTSX and recoil is meh. QD YHM Brake for the YHM Resonator. Super accurate, super deadly, cheap components! Also shoots the 150 Badlands around 2950-2980 with great accuracy, still testing though.

I think Reelamin said it best. 6 ARC and .308. I have both. I use the 6 ARC in a skeleton AR15 platform on hogs (although still a bit weighty) the trade off for mag capacity is worth it for sounders on the run. I use my .308 for everything else.

I found a Tikka CTR barrel in 260 Rem someone had cut back to 16 inch and threaded. Put it on a Tikka action and in a Tikka CTR stock with CTR mag. That is an extremely handy rifle and 260 has a lot of performance. Run it suppressed so muzzle blast not an issue.

.308 .....recoil???? What recoil!!!!!!!!! My 11 year old grandson shoots a .308....geeeeeeez
Some are more recoil-sensitive than others. That sensitivity may be to blast or punch or both. The 308 in a short barrel has a particularly nasty muzzle blast, housed in a light rifle, it may have punch greater than most '06s. That will exceed tolerable for some, may be just unpleasant for others. Maybe like you, I've steeled myself to recoil through many years of shooting large bore handguns and elephant rifles. Even so, I find it unpleasant to be at the bench next to a Remington 600 in 308.

Do you have any trajectory data for the 243 110 SMK and the 110 Hornady 308?
I am guessing you need a fast twist 243 to stabilize the 110 SMK?
I am intertested in the 243....didn't realize the BC was that high on it.

I believe you're correct. I spoke to Berger when I built my 6 CM as shooting the 115 EH. They suggested a 7twist. That's what I went with and it shoots great.

Oh I dont disagree on the 308 recoil. The op listed specific cartidges and was concerned about recoil. I made my suggestion based on what was posted and asked darn sure not my opinion. 🤣 🤣

We have 2 rem 600 Mohawks, both 16" barrels, one 243 one 308. That 308 kicks like a mule, more felt recoil than a heavier, longer rifle in 300wsm. I put a deceleration pad on it, but it's significant, especially considering my 16yr old daughter shoots it. I loaded 165 HP SGKs because I have a lot; it would be better to use 130g TTSX for less recoil. Here's a deer she shot this year. The 243 kills well and has less recoil, but it doesn't do this. IMO ballistics are immaterial for the OP's 0-400yd range, but our 243 can't generate the velocity to overtake the 308 at 16" of barrel. 308 130g TTSX are 2900ish in that rifle, and 243 pushes an 85g SHPBT at 2950 or 100g SGK at 2800. These are the most accurate loads, not the fastest.

Good for your daughter !
