Yes butt it gets like that some times. this forum is the reason I can shoot long range and have the gun that can. my longest shot down here in the south is 100 yds at tops but now I am hunting up north it opens up 4- 1000 yards. now to get back to the forum I am only in too this long range hunting for my grandson if I can get the gun scope and proper know how from u guys I'll pass it on to him because he is the future and( hell what gun is next long range ones) too go them goof balls after guns they get AR s what's next

I don't hunt or shoot long range but I find this a cordial site, and knowledge here is quite extraordinary.
Many of these types of sites are not so nice to the members. Lots of bullying and too much politics.I don't see that here.

Chase,
I think LRH has continued to stay true to its main mission, namely promoting the skills and gear necessary to take game at "long range".
That distance may be 400 yards for some with little practice at 1,000 yards or it may be 1,000+ yards for people with exceptional skill and good hunting ethics.

Certainly ballistic software, ammunition, rifles and optics have been progressing rapidly to assist us in truly long range hunting. In fact it appears the civilian LRH gear market is definitely outpacing the military gear. And yes, there is some overlap as a few will hunt with Barrett MRAD or Accuracy International rifles.

I am new to this forum so maybe im naive but I had some questions regarding getting my gun and loads better developed for longer shots and all my questions were answered and then some. So I feel this forum is exactly what it advertises

First, I want to say that this is one of the best forums in the internet. It truly is a wealth of knowledge concerning all things long range shooting/hunting. I've been on here for quite awhile (~10 years) but recently I've noticed quite the change in the thread content and topics. Seems like the focus has been shifting more and more away from long range hunting/shooting to just simple general hunting and gun stuff...nothing really wrong with that but it seems to be driving the focus away from the prerogative of the site, and what drew me (and I'm sure others) here to begin with. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I want this site to remain the authority on long range hunting and continue to be the treasure trove that it is. Currently, however, I feel like we're really diluting the resource. Rant over.

One thing we need to consider is that the knowledge of rifles and ballistics, internal external terminal, that is required to be a proficient long range hunter or shooter is far far greater than what is required to do most "general shooting/hunting" (gun goes bang, deer goes down, it works - is sufficient for most hunters, and a box of cartridges might last over a decade). So even folks who aren't themselves interested in long range hunting or shooting but who desire to really understand rifles and ammunition and hand loading and all that stuff do well to ask the long range people because odds are they are far more knowledgeable than their hunting buddies or the guy at the local gun store.

I've been on this site for less than a year but I have neen shooting and hunting for over 35 years.

So I have knowledge to share but far more to learn. I've learned tons in the months I've been part of this cool bunch of people and I want to thank all who have helped me learn and Len for making this site available.

This forum will continue to evolve and there will always be newbies like a lot of us are or were at one time. For the ones that do shoot 1000 yds or 2000 yds and are tired of the same questions being asked I would say this and as another member mentioned earlier on this thread, with work and family, time is something some of us don't have and searching for what we need is not always an option, at least for me this happens often.

As far as calling people unethical I'll say this, if you dont like it that is your choice but you dont have to bash anyone for it. This site I believe was designed to teach, learn, share and enjoy, not critize or be disrespectful. If you dont like someone shooting an animal a mile away thats fine, it's their choice and their right to do so, and not for anyone to judge.

Sometimes arguments happen but as long as we keep them under control I believe it's fine. We cant always agree but we can always respect each other

Just another of my $0.02

This forum is a tremendous wealth of information and I don't want to discourage anyone from coming here, reading what its members have to offer, and posting. The whole point of it is to share information with each other that hopefully allows us all to become consistently proficient at shooting and hunting at distances that historically were considered unethical, because it radically expands your opportunities for success. That distance used to be somewhere around 300 yards. Now, it's as far as you can reliably hit an 8-12" target as long as the impact velocity is sufficient for predictable bullet performance.

I'm by no means an authority on anything but I share my experience and what I know, and I encourage others to continue to do the same, because I want to continue to propagate this knowledge base which has helped me and others to be successful. It also helps us enjoy the true potential of our firearms. Probably 90% of what I know about long range shooting and reloading I learned from this website.

But, what I've been noticing more recently is that there are a lot of threads that are being started which, like a previous member mentioned, are more oriented towards the person who seems like they've never even shot a rifle or been hunting. I'm all for introducing people to both of those things but topics similar to "Best 200 yard deer gun" don't really get at the essence of what this site is about or what this community has to offer.

In a sentence, you want growth in a forum to stay relevant and not get lost in the sea of sites popping up all the time.
There is a finite number of shooters that ring steel at 1000+ yards, or even have the opportunity to shoot at those distances. Limit the membership to that small niche of elite shooters and before long that group will grow tired of the same conversations and next thing you know, LRH fades away.
I am in awe of the abilities of alot of you on here and would love the opportunity to get involved in shooting game ethically at extreme range. Unfortunately , living in the southeastern US, it's just not that easy to find places to hone those skills, or get shot opportunities on game at long range.
Alot of us on here just enjoy rubbing keyboard elbows with the guys and gals that have the opportunity, skills, and drive to push the limits, even though its doubtful we will ever get to join on on the fun.
The great thing about this site though, for the accomplished LRHer, there are sections of the site that are just for the elite shooter. There is also a archery section, and a few general forums.
I think there is room for all of us to have a good conversation about the things that stump us, whether its about hunting in places that will never offer a 1000 yard shot, or a hunt in a place where you can spot an animal so far away it take half of a day just to get within 1200 yards.
Thanks Len, for what I think is the best HUNTING/SHOOTING site on the web !

Been here a while and the site has evolved and revolved since the start. A lot of talented people have added thier input, unfortunately most are too busy, thin skinned or intolerant to remain.......
Long range seams to be a very volatile subject for most to talk about without getting too uncivilized for Len's standards.
I have yet to shoot a critter long range to the truck and if I gotta walk out there anyway I may as well take a shot that is closer. Now killin rocks is a whole different ballgame ;-)

it is not the 200 yd deer gun treads that are the problem those are fine but over the years the pioneers in gun and cartridge design that use to post on there progress and development have to deal with to many naysayers. you know the that's a barrel burner why waste your time, or the creedmore can do that, and the it is a waste to shoot 100+ grains per round and to many other negative comments has pushed them away and now that is lost knowledge for all of us.
this is just my opinion but this change wasnt for the better it was to the determent of this forum

I am not young or new to hunting, I am into the long range game for about 3 years now. This forum is great, also glean I for from snipers hide and competition pages on Facebook. Shooting field matches these last few years has made raised my ability to engage an animal at long range more than one can imagine. This season connected on two mule deer bucks at 800 and a mountain lion at 600 yards. There is no substitute for practice and the match environment to improve at what we do IMO. Literally a thousands of rounds a year sent down range at steel targets from 300-1800 yards and movers as well. It's fun, challenging and we learn a ton.

I have been in the benchrest accuracy business for 50 years both competing and making winning guns. The problem with all forums is there is so much junk issues on items not pertaining to the forums actual mission or subject matter that the really good shooters, technicians and smiths etc want nothing to do with it. I wrote on accuracy for 8 years for 3 publications and spent more time arguing with shooters who knew nothing on the subject at hand calling me at two in the morning ...that I just quit.
You will never see the best info on any forum. You will see self made experts testing loads in the wind off a rickety bench at insane distances. It is the nature of the beast. WINNERS WIN BECAUSE THEY KNOW SOMETHING YOU DO NOT...do your homework and seek out the experts.
This forum does have some really good members offering up the best knowledge they possess. Beware of those that find the need to be an expert on everything out there and post every day. As Ed Shilen remarked to me one day at the shop, "The uninformed are always the most positive"
I for one will miss the information you might have imparted to us. I always appreciate those who have the expertise to share to make me better at what I do. I guarantee I am not one to call at two in the morning, or call at all, unless I was invited to, and arranged the call ahead of time. I will keep an eye out for any of your posts hoping t I will learn from it. Oh - an I might add, I understand where you ae coming from as far as writing - At one time I wrote for every computer magazine that you could buy, and did it for five years. I was happy to answer questions, since teaching helps me learn.

The Ruger Precision in no way had anything to do with custom rifle builders business. There is no production rifle made in that price range that can compete with full high end customs. Do they shoot good, well sure but not that good.
My point was - that all of a sudden I could have a rifle I could afford that let me reach out to ranges greater that 1000yards. So, I never had any reason to buy a multi/mega thousand dollar custom rifle.
