TSS Ammo! R U Kidding Me?

I called Carlson to find out which choke to get for my grandson's 20 ga for TSS loads. They said that the TSS choke was only supposed to be used with #7 or smaller size shot. The choke and #7 TSS load hammered his big Tom at about 50 yds last month. Only had 1 pellet in the breast meat. Amazing! We used #8 AA loads to sight in the red dot sight so we didn't waste the TSS's.

I'd like to keep this thread going for a bit...
I have a junior that will be in the spring hunt of 2024 in Arizona.
I have access to 1 shotgun that is a New England Firearms Pardner.
I plan on using TSS type shot after my turkey hunting specialist nephew recommended it.
Question is, how "full" is a choke at .401 bore diameter and will that amount of choke do what it needs too with TSS?
I plan on mounting a prism type sight and sighting it in with birdshot, #8.
I plan on using the 410 on my own hunt if I can get drawn. I have 12 and 20 ga options but will satisfy my curiosity if I can get a turkey with the same shotgun the youth is going to use.
The junior hunt is "over the counter" buy on a tag. He's going regardless if I can draw a tag.

Bob, TSS has very thick wads. For this reason, the shot usually likes a modified, improved modified, or a light full choke. Gun makers are all over the ma;p on bore sizes and choke sizes, you should plan on investing some money in shells to play with chokes.

You should not expect any correlation between #8 and TSS shot, like comparing apples to watermelons.

Trial and error is the key, don't be afraid to fail, and best wishes!

Ask the ammo manu--- I got choke suggestions from win, federal, and a small ammo Co and they ended up being spot on
Thanks guys! I will call tomorrow. I just looked at one site and the choke in this barrel is (more open) than the full choke bore they mentioned by about .003 tighter per their spec. I think I found some $30/5 rounds on a custom reloader site, all tungsten #9. I guess I will be forced to pattern some TSS.
Thanks again.

At least the price seems to be dropping

So my son bought a .410 for his soon to hunt daughters in couple years but also to take several youngsters that do not have someone to take them. Put red dot on it and it is surprisingly accurate at to 40!

But WTHELLO is the price of TSS in .410! On average its at least $42-$45 box of 5! Some over $50!

For a .410! 12 ga not much more but is many times in size quantity more in powder and shot! Seriously, the one area to bring kids into hunting and its more expensive than full bore is RIDICULOUS!

Now I did just find Browning at $37 at ~$7 off but still $7+ a shot! How does a kid practice? How do parents with multiple kids afford to get kids into shooting?

So shooting Weatherby factory ammo is freaking cheaper to shoot?
CORPORATE GREED!

The TSS shot comes from China. A couple of years ago it was $10 per pound, thus the cost of loaded ammo.

As an avid Predatore caller and hunter, I have killed a lot of coyotes in Mexico, Az, and Ca with various shotguns all with BB and #4 buckshot. There is no doubt that the TSS shot is better than Lead Shot, but I don't know what percentage increase you could expect in Kill rate with TSS over Lead shot in close cover, open country would be another issue.

Having owned a lot of shotguns for predator hunting and Duck/goose hunting, I can not emphasize enough the need for Patterning your shotgun to evaluate not only the pattern density but the point of impact vs aim = Gun Fit.

I am new to turkey hunting, but when I saw TSS stuff at $70+ dollars a box, I about choked to death. If the prices come down I might try it, but that is a hard pill to swallow.

My son and I just harvested our first turkeys last weekend and we did it with $15/box ammo. Right or wrong it worked. I was shooting Remington 3.5" #5s, and my son was shooting 20ga 3" #4 1oz loads from Hevi-metal. He smoked his bird at about 40yrds and mine was probably 30-35yrds. 1 shot each.

I will try better rounds, but I bought these before the spring hunt and it was all that we could find.
