The .257 -WHICH CARTRIDGE???

Len,
I'm in the same boat as you. I have an anTiX SA standard bolt face and a Ruckus GA Hunter short mag bolt face, so I scooped up a bunch of 133 elites and 135 LR hybrids, thinking 25 creed or a 25 short mag of some sort. Lance is still talking me toward the 25 SST...
Or I might build 2, a handy 25 creed lightweight deer/antelope rifle and a longer range 25 short mag on a Manners LRH stock. Have a 22" Bartlein 257 7.75 twist #13 CFW ready to be spun up, if I can make a decision....

Good evening all!
We just got a great deal on a large batch of Berger .257 EOL 133gr bullets. Currently we don't have a 1/4 bore in our inventory. The last one Jill had was a 25WSSM and we loved it. We also have more rifle components than we can currently build rifles.
I always pick a Cartridge and then start purchasing all the components for the build. Started out different this time.
We have the bullet a .257 Berger 133gr EOL. now we need to start working around the bullet. I know that this bullet is on the heavier/longer side.
I am thinking a 1:7 twist on the barrel. Now need the Cartridge to start purchasing the Action, Brass, Dies, Reamer.
What CARTRIDGE would you have to shoot these bullets for hunting??? Plan on a "Mountain Type Rifle"
Interested in a SA for this build but can go LA.
Looking for infor from someone that has previous experience with heavy .257s. or your perfect idea of 1/4 bore Slayer you would want to own and hunt with.

Thanks
Len & Jill
Again, you ask what would be the best 1/4 bore slayer to hunt with and they all do the job from the tried and true 25-06 and all the sexy boutiques In between. However if you want the best 1/4 bore slayer still to date the 257 Weatherby is still the king.

If you don't care about mid or long action like many have mentioned, The 25 Sherman in a long action ,06 size, will run over 3300 as well as the 25 Max in a mid action at the same speed. Dies, reamers, brass available for the max and dies and reamers for the 25 Sherman. Use your own brass from 270, 280, 280 A.I.

My first thought due to all my years hunting with it would be the .257 Weatherby Mag... but, with the request for a "light mountain rifle" in a SA well I'd pick the .257 Roberts AI I've used a .257 Robert in the mountains more than a few times and it punches way above its weight class on Deer, later in its life I re-chambered it for the AI
I was amazed at the performance, accuracy, and case life of the cartridge as an AI. Good luck, Cheers.
I've been tossing around the idea of rebarrel to 257 Roberts AI on a Remington 600 action I own. It was a 6mm REM, but was shot out long ago. How would it perform with a 22" tube with the 130 class bullets?

I have a fast twist 17" 25 PRC and a 15" 25-284 that I need to do load development on still
I'm a 6.5 and 284 guy I have all the variants in those cal . I built a 25-284 1-8 twist last year , and am really impressed . I didn't even buy any dies , I used my 6.5-284 bushing dies with the proper bushing necking down 6.5-284 brass and my competition 284 win seat die too seat the bullets . I was surprised too get 3874 fps max and a average of 3860 with the 90 gr Hammer I have a old Speer reloading manual that has data for the 25-284 . I was comparing vel versus powder charge too the 25sst and I'm right with the sst pretty close . I also have several 6.5 prcs and have kicked around the idea of the 25 prc . All that's necessary is changing bushings , no other changes . Lapua Brass for both and your good too go . It seems the 25 PRC with the prc case design would be great , but if you where going for the heavies in that cal the med length action would be best . I built my 25-284 on a med action . I also have the 25-06 great cartridge but the AI would definitely be better . Regardless of the OPS decision they all are great cartridges and a lot of fun too try and get full potential out of them, my biggest problem is trying too pick what cartridge and rifle too hunt with every year , they all are great . Good luck on your 25 cal build.

That sounds like a great idea, as shorter barrels go it would perform great I'd think, not crazy overbore and still giving good velocity, and acceptable recoil for a light rifle. Cheers

I sure like my 25-284 , but something tells me the 25 cal neck down 6.5 PRC would be a screamer. Same 6.5 bushings dies with no other changes ,but bushings , med or long action.
👆🏻This is exactly what I have been dreaming about for about a year. Just been waiting for a bullet that inspires me….133 EOL sounds perfect.
