Thats how you do it!

What Nyles said. If price isn't a factor, get a custom rig. Here is what I did with a Savage 300WM that was my "medium" range and wind bucking rig(1100 yds and under). Wanting something with some more Zing and after a long research period(over 1 year)(yes, I am picky and yes friends call it something else) on what would fit my needs for some serious long range applications, (shooting prairie dogs/critters out to 2,000 yds),I sent it to Kirby to have it rechambered to a 270AM. I actually had only two chambers in mind, the other was in 300RUM as I had one already set up for an elk gun and loved it. Weight to me was not an issue. The stock that was on the Savage I am reusing so I just needed Kirby to use the existing Savage action (accurize it), fit the new barrel and drop it back into the stock for me and bed it. Since I provided the gun/action that cost was already absorbed so to speak, having the rest done the way I am doing it ends up being what I consider "reasonable". It should be a long range tack driving machine when its done. Look for a used gun as you have to just provide the gunsmith with an action. You can put any good stock you want on it. I happened to like the Savage so I didn't have to fork out the bucks for a different one. A cost savings there. He can order you any barrel you want too. The kind of barrel length and twist will be decided once you have discussed the application for the "new" gun. All I can say is that it is very exciting to have a custom gun built as it will be your baby. Better accuracy, easier to clean - custom barrel, in a caliber that not every Tom, Dick or Harry will have.

I had a friend who doesn't have any custom guns call them (wildcats) freaks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Ok, I can live with that as it is my freakin gun. Sorry, couldn't let that one pass by. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I will buy another factory gun someday but it may be just for the action. I do like the Remingtons, Tikkas, Sako's and Savages for out of the box performance. Also, Cooper makes one heck of a rifle in what I consider a custom or at least semi-custom rig. You just can't get all the real wildcats in these kind of setups without going the Gunsmith route. That isn't to say a factory chamber won't cut it, because there are many good choices going that route especially when you reload. Cooper does make some that are still considered wildcats ie. 6mm-284.

So many choices, so little money. Everyone here is more than willing to help you out and there is tons of information on this site. It is not as tough (work and expense) as a person may think coming up with a custom rig. Part of the adventure.

I have gone on here for longer than I had planned but I hope you come to the conclusion that at the very least you should explore the Custom route. Apologize for the lengthly post. Good luck.

I don't understand how, I have always just gotten rifles off the shelf. Don't know how to get a custom one, as stupid as it sounds. Describe the process please.

[/ QUOTE ] decide if you want a stainless action or blued; a bdl( one witha floor plate) or and adl( with out a floor plate). get a remington 700 action (buy the gun and throw AWAY or e-bay the barrel($25) and the stock. you can use my gunsmith or someone elso on here . have a custon barrel installed . for a 308 caliber barrel i would only get a kreiger. have either a shilen(75$) or jewel trigger($200)installed. have it bedded into a h&s or mccmillian stock of you choice. the difference is amazing. roninflag

I have a Savage 112BVSS and it shoots 3/4 MOA, I've shot at 1000 yds with an 8" group. Very accurate out of the box.

Armalite AR 30M If it shoots like the 338LM does you will be very happy look on gunsamerica.com they sell for 1200 to 1400 Tod

I have a Sendero 300WM. .75MOA with factory ammo, about .5MOA with handloads. Only modification is lightening of the trigger.

Yes, my scope cost a bit more than the gun! (Nikon Tactical).

You will get a lot of calls for custom on here. I'm not going to knock those suggesting that; custom guns are nice and usually will out-shoot my .5MOA Sendero. What you need to ask yourself, is exactly what do you want? Can you shoot well enough to make use of a .5MOA gun? Will you even tell the difference in the field between .3MOA and .5MOA? Most of all, for your purposes, will a couple of inches at 1000yds really mean anything to you?

If you want the ultimate in accuracy, definitely go custom. If .5-.75MOA is all you require, save yourself a ton of money and get a Sendero or the other factory suggestions posted.

If I were to buy off the shelf for accuracy, the Sendero would be my choice as well. If a lighter rifle was needed, I'd still stick with the 700, but in one of the lighter models.

Might I inquire as to where you live ? Your personal info is " not " Also you seem to be struggling with the concept of having a custom rifle built .

The question you are asking is not answerable as each rifle is different . One Sendero may be a hummer the next NO! One 40xb maybe a house afire shooter and the next , no way . and so on .

Unfortunately even if you build a custom rifle it may turn out to be a dud . The chances are against it though if you use a smith and comnponents that are top notch .

None of this is what you wanted to hear I'm sure ........but , that is the way it is .

I am willing to walk you through the custom build process if you decide to go that way. My email addy is in my bio .

Alright here we go we got some rifles now. I'm looking into custom but I would still like to know what most people consider the most accurate .300 win mag, for future reference.

[/ QUOTE ] the sako trg-42 is not really a rifle you can go in a pick off a shelf.on the lists i frequent there is one and it is 4K. i can give you a list of possibilities. the factory rifles : remington 40xb; the weatherby accumark; rem sendero ; win laredo. the savage 12bvss as far as i know only comes in 300wsm not 300win. FN has several models that are similar but more money than the laredo. i would say the 40xb is the "best" of those mentioned; with a 27"+ barrel and an external adjustable trigger. roninflag

roninflag is correct that the Savage BVSS is not avaliable in the 300 Win Mag. It is however available in the 112 VLP (varminter low profile) which most seem to prefer over the BVSS.
Another rifle not mentioned is the Weatherby Accumark which is available in 300 Win. You could almost go custom for the price though.
For the money spent verses likleyhood of getting a good shooter I believe the Savage is the best bet(for an off the shelf rifle).
