What Nyles said. If price isn't a factor, get a custom rig. Here is what I did with a Savage 300WM that was my "medium" range and wind bucking rig(1100 yds and under). Wanting something with some more Zing and after a long research period(over 1 year)(yes, I am picky and yes friends call it something else) on what would fit my needs for some serious long range applications, (shooting prairie dogs/critters out to 2,000 yds),I sent it to Kirby to have it rechambered to a 270AM. I actually had only two chambers in mind, the other was in 300RUM as I had one already set up for an elk gun and loved it. Weight to me was not an issue. The stock that was on the Savage I am reusing so I just needed Kirby to use the existing Savage action (accurize it), fit the new barrel and drop it back into the stock for me and bed it. Since I provided the gun/action that cost was already absorbed so to speak, having the rest done the way I am doing it ends up being what I consider "reasonable". It should be a long range tack driving machine when its done. Look for a used gun as you have to just provide the gunsmith with an action. You can put any good stock you want on it. I happened to like the Savage so I didn't have to fork out the bucks for a different one. A cost savings there. He can order you any barrel you want too. The kind of barrel length and twist will be decided once you have discussed the application for the "new" gun. All I can say is that it is very exciting to have a custom gun built as it will be your baby. Better accuracy, easier to clean - custom barrel, in a caliber that not every Tom, Dick or Harry will have.
I had a friend who doesn't have any custom guns call them (wildcats) freaks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Ok, I can live with that as it is my freakin gun. Sorry, couldn't let that one pass by. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I will buy another factory gun someday but it may be just for the action. I do like the Remingtons, Tikkas, Sako's and Savages for out of the box performance. Also, Cooper makes one heck of a rifle in what I consider a custom or at least semi-custom rig. You just can't get all the real wildcats in these kind of setups without going the Gunsmith route. That isn't to say a factory chamber won't cut it, because there are many good choices going that route especially when you reload. Cooper does make some that are still considered wildcats ie. 6mm-284.
So many choices, so little money. Everyone here is more than willing to help you out and there is tons of information on this site. It is not as tough (work and expense) as a person may think coming up with a custom rig. Part of the adventure.
I have gone on here for longer than I had planned but I hope you come to the conclusion that at the very least you should explore the Custom route. Apologize for the lengthly post. Good luck.
