side arm for wolf protection

What bare minimum caliber would anyone here recommend for protection in wolf country?? Auto/revolver. A woman will be using this handgun. She has fired as large as .44mag. Any ideas most welcome. Thanks
I carry a .41 Rem Mag for anything that wants to cause me grief.
I normally carry a 240gr. Bullet at 1300fps but if I travel in country with big bears and moose I pack a 265gr. Heat traded lead solid at 1275fps.
No I never feel under gunned.

I didn't read all the way thru so I don't know if someone mentioned the newer .22 magnum semi pistol by Keltec.....30 rounds on nasty hollow points..taint no wolf gonna walk thru that...nor human....reasonable weight...extreme fire power....and did I say 30 ROUNDS.....dont recall....so let me say it again....
30 ROUND semiauto 22 magnum.......

We're talking about wolves not bears! However remote -- wolves have been known to eat people and recently it's been a woman in Alaska and a man in Saskatchewan! Therefore I'm not interested in scaring off a wolf full of adrenaline because if one is trying to eat me -- I certainly want more than a .22! The Alaska woman was killed and eaten by a pack of wolves and if a pack is the issue, you'd want more than 8 rounds from a .45 – considering the high pressure of the encounter -- many misses would probably be the norm! A high capacity 9mm (17/18 rounds) can be had in a relatively lightweight package that can be handled well by most people – so make mine a 9mm! However, it certainly should be a gun that she'll carry and be able to access quickly -- as it won't be any good is she isn't carrying it and can't get to it quickly!

My Sig Nightmare 1911 holds 9 .45's and 8 more rounds on my belt.
I can run 6 plates in a few seconds.A 230 grain JHP at 50 feet
would remove a lot of his head? I carry it every day and shoot it at least 3 times
a week..I'll stick with it. Or a nice 1911 in 10MM you can crank it up into the .41 Mag
range (not in a Colt Delta!) 155 grain at 1550 fps?

I'd hunt wolf country (and do) with no sidearm at all. If you are scared, stay home. mtmuley
lol.

but to be fair, if you are hunting you already have a rifle. And I'd rather face a dangerous animal with a rifle than a handgun any day.

I like the G20SF . It a great general purpose defense handgun. If I was strictly loading for wolf . Something like a 155 hollow nose @ 1400 + fps. But most anything will work. Wolves aren't tough like a bear can be. Anything that would work on a fighting dog will work on a wolf.
A handgun on you and easily accessible when your hunting sure beats needing one and not having one. Any cart that has a proven track record on 2 legged predators will work on wolves. I just like my Glock.

LOL I was out in the field the other night and shot a wild hog,,,It was looking straight at me in high grass (NV) 40 yds away, facing me at an angle...I hit it in the jaw with a 308, 110 gr GMX , dropped it,. Then it started to move feet going etc ...raised its whole body off the ground slinging chunks of dirt and dust in the air, basically doing a somersault,,,,I hit it again in the body, then as it turned again got another head shot....No, for a wolf or anything , not a 22 or 22 mag for me....I got one for dispatching animals I trap, is all..my backup is a 44 mag. 225 Hornady..

I don't always count on being able to have time, to draw and fire.

Obviously a rifle in hand is faster and better in most circumstances than a handgun in a holster. But if a person has a long range rifle in a pack or drag bag when a wolf or bear just shows up. Then an easily accessible handgun would sure be nice !
In all the up close aggressive encounters I've had with brown bear in thick brush, I've never needed to be a quick draw artist to come out alive and not bleeding.
