Shot group question

I wonder if it's the heat being trapped is the issue with some of these cf barrels. Would be curious to know how the new kreiger cf barrels with that new steel are doing.

Not sure about Kreiger, but I've been giving the Bartlein 400 MOD (harder steel) Carbon a run for the money on my 7 Allen Mag. Seems to shoot just as good as their all steel barrels and no walking on warm-ups. Very impressed so far. Increased barrel life is a definite bonus. Ordered another one for a fast 277 build.

One thing about Bartlein that I like, is that they run a radius from the chamber away which makes them a lot stiffer than the ones that just do a straight lathe cut down for the carbon wrapping.

Lol, ya I meant Bartlein. How long did you have to wait for a barrel?

Ordered 08/18/2020 and they shipped it out on 09/29/2020. For the current project, I ordered just last week, so we'll have to see on that. They shipped way ahead of their projected date last time, so kind of got my hopes up for this time around. :) Talk to Mark.

Are we still talking about,.. the OP's Bullet ?
Inconsistent BC's ?? LOL !
NOT with,.. Berger 168's !

I have a fierce 28 nosler carbon fury. Using 168 gr vld Berger bullets with adg brass and h1000. I have a guy that is good at working up accurate loads and he has great numbers for this load/rifle and the barrel has been broken in well, over a hundred rounds through it. Both he and i have shot several groups at 700 yards and can hold groups to a half minute. But there always seems to be one and sometimes 2 shots that open the group to 7 or 8 inches. He is going to try upping and lowering the charge by 2 tenths of a grain. Is there anything else we should be trying? What would you do?
Is the flyer consistently in a particular direction ie. higher or lower than the main group of hits or left or right of the main group?

For flyers higher or lower outside the rifle's expected accuracy but within the expected accuracy left and right are likely issues with that particular round. Like a hair more or less powder, brass not well resized, different neck tension etc. All these things can cause small changes in internal ballistics that translate to pressure differences which at 700 or 800 yards can be magnified.

Left or right hits outside the expected accuracy may be wind or may be shooting form. If you tip the rifle a little left or right it will affect POI. Usually tipping a rifle at 700/800 will usually translate into a large POI variations. Anecdotally, I've seen misses of a few feet at around 500 yards to the right because of a tipped right rifle.

If something was loose or malfunctioning like the scope the rifle would be all over the place at 700/800 yards with no consistency.

Rifle didn't shoot the the fierce loaded ammo within their 1/2 moa either (100 yards), so it's getting shipped back so hoping they will get it figured out and fixed. Stay tuned

At 700 yds, inconsistent wind gusts that you cant discern , will cause this. If you have a quick twist, try the 195 vld berger. I use 168 bergers in my 7mm wsm, 180's in my 7mm dakota and 7mm rum, and 195's in my 28 nosler. Shoots about .3 moa. All the other advice about double checking everything applies.

At 700 Yards, a 1 or, 2 MPH "Wind" can cause "problems" and open, the group, up !
A very light Wind, is barely noticeable,.. sometimes !
My 1/2 MOA, .270 WSM, becomes, almost ONE,.. MOA at, 700 yards, in our Desert, shooting spot !
Ditto for my sons, 7mm-08 with, 168 HVLD, Berger's.
And a thin, lite weight, hunting Barrel,.. CAN,.. "Walk" a bit, when shooting 5 shot, Groups !
Personally, we are going to shoot, 500 and 600 yards, to test our Loads / Rifles from, now on.
Our Limit, on shooting our 7.5 Pound Mtn Rifles at Game, has SHRUNK,.. to 650 yds Max. ( Wind dependent of, course ! ).
Dang wind
