Short Barrel Mountain Rifle

If you need the extra range of the .300WSM, then stick with a rifle that is around 8+ lbs (22 inch barrel) with the scope and mounts. Won't kick the crap out of you, and the 22 inch barrel is minimum I'd recommend for 300 WSM. That sucker will shoot a long ways.

+1, esp. with an effective muzzle brake ... and there are plenty to choose from. I understand it's not for everybody but an effective muzzle brake installed reduces felt recoil and muzzle rise significantly; being able to spot the target on impact is priceless.

I have a Savage 11 FCNS with 22" barrel in .300 WSM (my 1st and only WSM ... thus far ) with Benchmark tactical MB installed pushing the 215 Berger at 2750 FPS and the felt recoil is similar to .243s.

Cheers!

Spotting your own impacts when hunting alone or with a less experienced shooter can make all the difference in the world (especially for follow up shots on both misses or less than ideal hits). I've made hits on game/targets with a poor call by the spotter and made my own adjustments before he could get the words out. If I can spot my own hits then the spotter is just a backup.

Always nice when someone comes back to finish a thread!

Right? You beat me to it :D

Finished this rifle up. Stuck with a 22" 308. Went with a gun bearer for keeping it handy in the brush which works very well. In the end, the 308 is just cheaper and more enjoyable to shoot for me and allows me to have one general purpose rifle.

I was actually going to suggest .338 Federal. For what you intend, you did just fine. Now go shoot the crap out of it and make sure you post up a pick of your dead elk killed with a .308.

How about the old Remington Model 7 in 308?
thats the best reply on this thread. heres a little tid bit for the get a magnum boys. a 180 grain bullet from a 308 at 250 yards has just as much energy as a 180 bullet from a 300 wsm at 350 yards . if the 308 wont kill a elk at 250 yards should you not be shooting at elk at 350 yards with your magnums?

Add another 100 yards to the .300 WSM and you have a deal.:D
I just ran the numbers:
.308 @ 2650 w/180 Accubond
Vs
.300 @ 2950 w/same bullet=
The .300 almost doubles the range in this case, has same energy at 450 as the .308 does at 250...but I will agree that energy isn't everything.

chop both barrels down to 20 inches and i bet those numbers get even out there a lot farther

Not trying to be a smart-alec but I actually have a 20" .308 and 20" .300 sitting right here in front of me, I have a pretty good idea what they'll do. The .300 is still about 300 fps faster with some of those 180 grain tipped bullets (as in the example I used previously).
