Shooting rifle

Yobuck why do f class shooters choose 30-32" barrels in 308? Is it a rule? The o.o was asking about the 308

tmmcampbell shared his real-world experience with his Bergara HMR 6.5CM, what you do with it is entirely up to you. That goes with any recommendations from any of us. We can only advice, you have the ultimate responsibility in the decision-making process and the consequences associate with it, regardless what you've heard or read, good or bad.

On your initial post, I'd take the Tikka, but now that you've added the Savage FTR above in the mix. That is now my choice. Their out of the box accuracy is hard to beat and they are most DIY friendly.

Cheers!
I don't add the Savage in the mix, I just talked about it. It is an excellent rifle, but too heavy for my purposes...

Hi

I'm looking for a new and accurate rifle for target shooting at 800-1000 meters in 308W. But I would like a rifle not extremely heavy to carry it across the mountains too.

I am between two options right now:

Remington 700 milspec 5r: 2000 €
Tikka T3 Super Varmint: 1500 € (I dislike a bit its plastic magazzine)

What would you choose? It's worth spending more on the Regminton? I'm interested specially in the accuracy. Do you have better recomendations than this rifles with the same budget?
Go with the 700 5R Milspec, and just swap the trigger with an aftermarket unit. You should be good to go.

I love the .308 Win, and if you want one in .308 Win, get it. Don't worry about what others think. I have the same rifle you are asking about, and it shoots sub-1/4 MOA groups with handloads. Despite what all the 6.5mm supporters say, the .308 Win is still a very capable round (thanks to modern components & technology), and is very often overlooked due to the recent 6.5 craze going on in the US right now.

But since everyone keeps trying to get you to go the 6.5mm route, and if you decide to go that direction, Rem offers a 5R Milspec in .260 Rem, but not sure if you can get it over there... Factory part # is 85195.

I think .308 is a great choice when cost per round and barrel life is considered. Not every .308 load is supersonic to 1000m however, so careful consideration will have to be given to bullet/powder choice.

The 5r might be a bit better suited to shooting targets with the 24" sendero contour barrel, compared to a tikka with a 20" tube. The tikka will be easier to carry though.

As was mentioned, the Tikkas are built on a long action, so it's possible to modify the bolt stop and use a 30-06 magazine. This allows magazine feeding of cartridges over SAAMI maximum length. With the 5r, you will be limited to single feeding if you want to seat high BC bullets to the lands. Both have similar medium twist rates ~1:11. The 5r's 24" barrel will likely yield an additional 100fps, and for 1000m I would probably choose the Remington on that alone. Personally if I were going with the tikka it would be the Sporter - those GRS stocks are really nice (...but heavy).

If you can find one look at the Gen 2 milspec Remington. You won't be disappointed.

Remington offers the 5R Milspec Gen2 .308 Win rifles in a 20" and 24" configuration...Both threaded with thread protectors.
