Shooting groups on my birthday

After careful ponderings and a bottle of really, really expensive Scotch, a friend decided to go the other way.......one shot groups. Said he found it gave very consistent smallest group measurements. He is known among our hunting circles for his big thought concepts. :) :) :)

So, is he moving to a .17 HMR to reduce his group size?

Happy birthday!
Here's a completely accidental group trying out some 168 match kings in my 7RM. I just went to the manual, picked out a middle of the road powder weight. 1 sighter, adjust. Shot 4 rounds. This one has some promise! Lol....

WOW! Some accident! What could you do on perpose?

Brass prep improvements I learned here and for some reason, this 168MK out-shoots anything heavier I have hunted with. I simply tried Retumbo with the lighter bullet and stuck my finger on the manual. "This should give me good safe start charge, I think". I was looking for a practice round for trigger time, nothing else.

It was the nut behind the gun and on the loading press, that was holding me back, lol.

On ARF the standard is five, five shot groups shot on a single sheet of paper. I like that standard a lot but I think it's really close to challenging the shooter's capabilities as much as the rifle. I've also been told you can't say it's an MOA gun until you have 10 shots in an inch. Lots of opinions out there but I'm like you, a hunter. If I kill what I'm trying to I'm pretty happy.

But you asked for groups. Top two are 100 meters, then the rifle, 100 yards, anda pair I got at 305 yards because two is a group right:cool:

Today I turned 47.
I decided that I would no longer judge a rifle based on 3 shot groups.
After a phone call with my smith, I decided it would be 5. It's easy to say .25" group when it's three.
My heart is in bench rest. Years ago, I discovered F class and then PRS. I ended up selling my br rig. I regret that.
The reality is this: I'm a hunter. I love shooting, but I also love the woods and convening with nature, much like everyone else here. I am not, nor will I ever be a competitive shooter. It's just not for me. What is for me in the shooting sports world is bench rest. The pure joy of experimentation, repetition and precision.
This fall, my friend Jon will be building me a new rifle. Not sure what cal yet, but it will be a bench gun and occasionally shoot some f class. I'm not concerned with scores, trophy's or plaques, just a good tIme and a little bragging here and there. Beyond that, it's now for the most part about deer until January 1.

thanks for reading my ramble. Here's a fiver from today at 100y.

Holycity, I feel your pain
Several years ago i gave my nephew all (4) of my bench guns, dies, small press, powder dropper, 220 Russian brass, etc. I didn't think I would shoot them any more. I'm now 71 and have gotten back into my rifles in a big way. Sure do miss shooting repetitive bug holes! Oh well, I do have one left, but it needs a new barrel😡
