Zombie thread but...
I used to rarely wear glasses when shooting bolt guns. Pistols at steel yes. AR, sometimes.
Last summer, I was shooting my original 70-year-old Garand. It experience what I believe was a metal fatigue induced failure in the bolt, which fractured and blew out the magazine and made the stock into splinters. I was NOT wearing glasses. I was lucky; I had all the hair burned off my left arm (curled under the gun on the bench) and a couple small cuts to it, but nothing else.
I pretty much always wear eye protection at the range now. Hunting, sometimes yes sometimes no.
