SHERMAN WILDCAT SUGGESTIONS

Rich I grinned at receiving the email about this thread....

Like we talked about on the phone...might poll the members on the desire for a .257 in a Short action. To meet the wby mag velocity...Hornady's new .257 has pretty good bc.

I think a .224 on a fast 1:7 might be cool too.

(These have probably been mentioned but I didn't read every page)

So, entertain the musings of a serial tinkerer for a moment:
What do you have that will fit a .473 bolt face and will fit into a 3.050" magazine?
Something in the 6mm to 7mm size that will minimize wind and elevation correction to make easy work of whitetails out to about 400-500 yards.
I originally thought 6-284 but I'd like to hear what you've got in the lineup.

I don't know if any of this is possible, but Sherminate a 22-250 case.
Lapua makes brass
There's already the 95gr smk and probably more bullets to follow.

I'm all for Sherminating every case out there that can benifit from it. Its easier to neck down lapua brass to make the 22 creedmoor right now. Alpha muntitions is supposed to be coming out with 22 creed brass soon.

I load 77 grain SMK's in 22-250 Lapua and shoot it in my 22 Creed. The necks are a bit short but they shoot lights out. The advantage is no resizing of brass prior to shooting and it's darned accurate albeit slower.

I can't imagine what a shermanized .22 would do for barrel life although that's not much of a concern for me.

You guys and your "Shermanized"; funny! "Bigngreen" used to say that and I think he started it.
Anyway, Shermanized, to me, isn't as much about velocity as it is overall design, and adding a little capacity and performance does not have to diminish barrel life. In fact, a properly designed case running at equal pressure with the parent, can actually increase barrel life. Also, a properly designed case can increase the brass life and have the ability to run higher pressure without destroying the brass. So put that in the Wikipedia for "Shermanizing":D

So what can be done to Shermanize a standard bolt face, short action (308 family), to make it better than an AI version. Lots of guys doing a 243 AI, 260AI, 7mm08AI, is there room for improvement?

Rich what would could you design that might fit a short action in .375 for African dangerous game or big plains game like Eland? Is that even possible?

As much as I would like to think I was capable of some kind of majic, I'm not! To be brutally honest, the 308 based A.I. cases could not be improved enough to make anything worthwhile! They are very good as they are. SORRY

You could just neck up the SS case and probably run 250 grainers at around 3000' if that would work

I really think if you want to stick with the 308 bolt face, the 284 could be Shermanized, as you say, and that would be the most gain without going to the SS in a short action. There is likely something out there already, but may not be available to everyone?
