Savage Long Range Hunter Rifle Review

I enjoyed your savage LRH rifle article. I'm just now getting interested in LRH. I own several hunting rifles and have killed several deer and one elk. I'm a senior citizen prefer 6 to 7 pound rifles without scopes. Less recoil but want accuracy. Does your 6.5 x 284 have about same recoil as 308 Winchester?

Thanks

Yes it does. In a 6-7 lb rifle the recoil would be significant. I am no spring chicken either and consider recoil in all my rifles. If you carry the rifle a lot while hunting, stay with a light weight but if you like to shoot the rifle a lot from a bench, get a heavier rifle. Recoil and rifle weight are closely related.

Have had two of these now with my share of headaches and very tight groups. My latest one had the rubberized coating on the stock start peeling so it's off getting blasted and dipped.

Its the factory accustock that came with the rifle. it has a thin film almost like heavy latex that will generally start to come off around the floorplate first.

Hi,

Not replying to any particular message just wanted to say I enjoyed the article. I have a LRH in 300 WM and enjoy it very much. I suspect due to the weight and possibly the muzzle-break and recoil pad it's not a hard kicking rifle. My light Remington 30-06 has a much harder felt recoil. I like the adjustable cheek piece a lot though it's very simple. Mine has the knobs so I guess it' not the latest model but it's a fine rifle. I can't fully utilize it's long range capability where I hunt but the weight isn't a big factor as I hunt from a stand most of the time. It would be tough to carry on a DiY Colorado elk hut without a horse or ATV at 11 plus lbs but a great rifle for the price.

Follow up questions on your 6.5 x 284 Norma article:
1. It sounds like you were using a 111 long range hunter 8.65 lbs with no scope
2. What is the difference between 6.5 x 284 norma and 260 Remington? I'm a reloader.
3. Did you notice any reduction of recoil with brake on or off?
4. Did you find when brake was on that group size increased 25%.

I would appreciate it if you would answer the above questions.

Thanks,'
Papa Joe

The 6.5x284 LRH is a little heavier. There is about a 200fps difference over the Creedmoor, check your reloading books. Yes there was some reduction in recoil using the brake. There was no significant change in group size. It just did not shoot well enough for me.

I have two 6.5x284 rifles, Ruger #1 and a custom on a Rem. action. The Ruger, I load light loads till I need the velocity. The other rifle is my "reach out there" rifle. I just got back from a long range school. The Creedmoor can reach a long distance and still stay super sonic. I was shooting factory Hornady 140 and is was still super sonuc at well over 1300 yards.
