My name is Don, I simply stumbled on to this forum. My hunting/ precision shooting career started when I was six, 1961. We were camping NE of Fairbanks. Dad was fishing on the lake, I slipped away from my mom to a hidden bay full of Mallards armed with a Stevens Youth Rolling block .22. Family history is a little vague as to the number, let's call it 25 head shot Mallards before my dad could find my sniper hide.
Stripped me down, made me swim for all those ducks, tanned my hide, made me clean those **** ducks then turned me into the Troopers when we got back to Ft. Wainwright. Guaranteed I haven't violated a regulation since then.
By the time I was seven I had tagged along on successful bear, moose and Caribou hunts as well as surviving two bear charges a black and a Grizzly, that were stopped by dad at bayonet range.
Caught my first 30 pound King Salmon when I was six.
From Alaska we moved to Oregon, hunting and fishing with unbridled passion. I remember my dad parked outside the high school on Friday nights. He would drive all night while I slept, nursing my football bruises, so we could hunt Mule deer or Elk in the morning.
My first center fire rifle was a Ruger 77 in 3006. Still my favorite.
I left Oregon for the Seattle area to pursue a career in law enforcement. Spent 20 years in Swat primarily assigned as a sniper. I was also a state certified instructor in patrol and precision rifle, handguns, shotgun and sub machine gun.
I was also a defensive tactics instructor.
Cool factor; worked with secret service on presidential security details.
Loved the job, retired in 2011.
While I was working I'd take all my leave and guide fishing in Alaska, usually about a month. Since retiring I spend all summer there, working in and around Katmai National park and Becherof National Wild Life Refuge. Lots of fish lots of big bears.
Fall and winter I live in Oregons Blue mountains, killed my last two elk less than 1/2 hour from the house. I also guide pheasant, Chukar and Quail hunts with my German Shorthairs.
Biggest rifle I've taken game with, 577 nitro side by side, bull elk in Montana.
Most accurate.338 Jarrett, a true 1/4 minute rifle.
My favorite; a Ruger 77. .3006
I've had since I was 13.
Yes I have a 6.5 creedmore
I think the .2506 is the most underrated cartridge out there.
All my bolt rifles wear 1917 slings.
