slow barrel

Or, a few shots at 100 to verify the "dog will hunt"……then shoot 10 or so @ let's say 300. Assuming the group is a good 300 yard group, adjust to place the group where it should be" @ 300………that should make you very comfortable to make those 500 yard shots!
Adding on to what memtb said:

Most of my hunting scope are Leupold CDS with their B&C reticle. The reticle is designed for a 200 yard zero with hashes for 300, 400, 450, and the top of the picket is 500. Of course, that is for the average cartridge (think 30-06 165 @ 2850 with a mid 400s BC).

When I first starting using them I would zero @ 200 as designed but now I "zero" using the first hash so it is dead on at 300. As I much prefer being 100% confident at 300 because things are more forgiving at 200 and most shots on the ranch I hunt are 250-350.
