Rem 700 short action - 7mm-08 build

Yes, that's the point I was making. The action costs the same as a complete rifle because the barrel, stock, trigger, etc, are trash. Big down hill since the most recent bankruptcy. I gave up on them after a brand new out of the box rifle wouldn't chamber a round.

You could spend a few hundred more and get a better action without having to strip the trash off it. Stillers are on sale at Red Hawk for $900.

Zermatt with a rail and lug for $900:

Kelblys for $1100 with a pinned lug and a rail.
Does anyone make a single shot 700 footprint action these days?
I'd really like a dual port.....can't seem to find one.

So, looking at doing a 7mm-08 build with a Rem 700 action. Looking at actions available for purchase, it is about the same price to buy a Remington SPS rifle and use the action - about $600. Am I missing something?
Midway USA has Rem SA 308 bolt face action on sale for around $550 now...or buy the whole ADL rifle for $600. Or find a used one cheaper...but that is the story. I have always found the Remington 700 to be a good value for rifle builds, and just as accurate as any on the market when trued.
Especially if you can do the work yourself, including reciever and bolt truing work. I built a very accurate 308 9 twist 22" Bartlein barrel, for just the cost of the barrel, the muzzle brake, and detachable bottom metal, and a used, on hand rifle stock, and set stock Rem trigger to two lbs...$600 total cost of the new rifle, cause I already owned the action.

....and ya do not need to "blue print" a 700 action to get an accurate hunting rifle...a high quality barrel is more important, and will fulfill all your reasonable hunting needs...lapping in the lugs is easy, anyone can do that, but still not necessary...with the quality barrel installed like Bartlein, or Proof has been good for me as of late...but others down the chain will work like Schilen.
And done, if using an aluminum bedding block stock, you're good to go, for most hunting situations...no need for a high dollar factory rifle that won't shoot as well, in many cases, as the 700 with a quality barrel, and excellent chambering job...especilly if on a budget, unless you want to...your money, your rifle.

He already went with the Evo II....

I already have it all worked out. Going with an EVO action, Proof Research blank, Timney trigger and a Magpul Hunter stock. Bamban, the guy who "spins" barrels for me, is doing the work pro-bono for an old Air Force buddy.

Well, just fired my first shot on this build. Ordered a Carbon Six prefit barrel for a Mac's Evo II action. 1:9 twist, 22". Got a nice 15% discount and a few other perks. He took my order over the phone and walked me through everything.
Carbon six's are a darn good barrel.

Just got done sitting in my daughter's Browning abolt. With 6.5 staball and a 150gr Sirocco. Came out to 2830.
