I'm looking at purchasing a 6BR barreled action and the guy had it as a 6AI first (which shot awesome, 3 shots touching) then cut it back to re-chamber into the 6BR.

It's now finished at 24". Looks like from reading 26"-28" is optimum for this round. Would I lose anything, besides some velocity? I'm not shooting competition or anything. Just looking to plink at longer ranges.

The twist on this barrel is 1:9". Which seems like a good twist for up to 95gr bullets.

Thoughts?

If the chamber job is done right it will probably shoot pretty darn good. 24", 1-9" should be fine for what you intend to do and I imagine you will be able to get plenty of speed using 95gn and below. Fun round, easy to load for, consistent and accurate.
I just got a stainless 26", 1-8t, 6BR barrel around the 20th of March from Northland Shooters Supply on clearance. Savage pre-fit for $300 out the door! I screwed the barrel on at my dining room table, took a day off from work to do load development (108gn ELD-M) and shot a local competition (my first ever) with it on the 30th.
I didn't come in first (3rd) but I'll be better prepared next year. The guy who won was supposedly a BR shooter, don't know his name but he had a really expensive looking setup in 6mmDasher (Someone actually carried his rifle to the bench for him). Maybe I can convince my eight year old to be my gun bearer next year! LoL. Cheers.

24" will be fine. I have a 19" 6 BR barrel on a specialty pistol and the only thing it gives up to a longer barrel is velocity. For a while I had the 19" barrel and a 30" barrel and they both shot very well with essentially the same load (30.1gr Varget in the 19" and 30.4gr Varget in the 30" with a 105gr A-Max) with the only difference being velocity. The 19" barrel gets 2655 fps and the 30" barrel was 2915 fps.

Nice.... This is on a Savage long action. McGowan barrel. I was looking at those at Northland, never fit one myself yet. But understand very doable with the savage pre fit barrels.

Alright, I think I'll buy this and go have some fun. I'm thinking the shorter barrel will make it a little more balanced, depending the stock I go with.

I'll be asking load development methods next. Especially if you did it in a day!

Thanks all

With the 95gr bullets, I've had good luck with H4895, Varget, BL-C2 and IMR 8208XBR.

I just bought a use Criterion savage prefit in 6BR for $100. It is a 28" bull 1" at the muzzle. I called my gunsmith and ask about cutting it back to 24" and he cutting it to 24" will loose a little muzzle velocity but it has potential to be more accurate because a shorter barrel is stiffer and has less barrel whip. He said he used a 24" 6br for years shooting 1000 yard bench rest and done really well with it. So I wouldn't worry to much about the 24". So if it doesn't cost too much buy it and have fun.

My 6br is 24 inches long and wonderfully accurate. Much more accurate than I will ever be. It was originally made for ground squirrel blasting so it has a 1-14" twist. I launch 55 ballistic tips at 3700 fps. Those tiny bullets still work very well at the longer ranges.

I'm in the process of putting together a 6 Dasher with a 22" barrel. From what I read and asked over on Accurate Shooter, velocity should be good. Guys were still getting 2850-2950 fps out of 22" 6 Dasher with 105's. So I'm sure your 6BR will do just fine. Lots of info over there for you to look at.
