Powder for the 308 ?

very informative and I thank you for it..I to have been a fan of IMR 4350 for a
long time.I have some here now. Also the reloader 15 is a wonderful powder.

Maybe that would be all I need and varget for my 223 and 22-250 rifle....Soon
as soon as it's back on the shelve I want to be a horader....I world like 8 lbs of each if and
when possible to get my paws on it.....Thanks again...John

Since you mentioned .223 - Reloder 15 is also my number one pick for .223/5.56 also... However I only shoot heavier bullets, 68gr. - 77gr. If I am shooting 55gr - 64gr., I use TAC or CFE-223.

The .308 is so easy to load for, and is so inherintly accurate anyways, it's hard to load a round that won't shoot well!

I chrono all my loads, and I stop based on velocity rather than pressure signs (of course unless I see pressure signs before I reach my target velocity), and RL-15 gives me either the fastest load, or one of the fastest in all my test loads for .223/5.56 and .308.

Right now I am developing a RL-15 load for the .30-06 using 150gr. Hornady Interbonds, 165gr. SST's, and 165gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. So far am getting excellent groups, but only standard velocities... Still working upwards...

+1 for Varget I load it for 308 and also 260. Great accuracy and I can work up a load in the winter and shoot it in the summer or next week. I live in Tx, 30 one day 90 the next.

I know this is probably a diffulcult question,but with all the powder shortage
in the USA..I am wondering what would be a pretty good all around powder..
I know it all depends on bullet weight..So lets just say like between 150 to
200 grain...

appreciate all the kind replies...Today I found a super accurate load using imr 4064 with the sierra 168 gr SMK at 100 yards from the bench I put 5 in 1/2...But I want to try this load over again just to be sure...Then I suppose it will be tough to get more of those bullets...john

Last week I went out to buy some powder, and of course, my usual stuff was sold out. I bought a few pounds of various powders that I had been wanting to try for a while, and three of them REALLY are performing OUTSTANDING, and I just had to mention them:

IMR 4007 SSC - this is a newer powder from IMR, which is supposed to be between 4320 and 4350 for burn rate (sorta like RL-17), so it is on the slow side for .308. Since it is so slow, I only loaded it with 175 SMKs and 178 A-Maxs, and shot from my 26" bbl Rem 700 - and got outstanding accuracy, 5 shot groups at 0.46". Velocity was a bit slow (2608 from a 26" bbl), but the accuracy was great. I don't think this powder would work very well for lighter bullets, or with shorter barrels. I bought this powder for .243 and .30-06, since they were out of 4350 and RL-19.

Accurate 2495 - basically Accurate's version of IMR 4895 and H4895, although some burn rate charts list it as being a tiny bit slower. I have made some exceptional loads for this for 68, 69, and 77gr. match .223 loads - and is getting outstanding speed and accuracy.
This powder in the .308, is grouping extremely well with my 155gr. SMK-P's and 168gr. SMK's, and 165 gr. SST's. Haven't tried it yet with the 175/178gr. bullets, but so far, I am getting better accuracy and speed with this powder than I am with Varget, and my AR10 is running it extremely well. A very versatile powder, can be used from .223 all the way up to some magnums.

Accurate 4100 - Completely off topic, I know, but I had to mention it. I needed some Alliant 2400 for my .357 Mag and .44 Mag loads, but they were out, and my usual replacements (H-110, N-110, Lil-gun, AA No.9, W296) were also out. I checked the burn rate charts and seen that this powder was designed for .410 and magnum handgun loads, and has a burn rate between 2400 and H110. I have not yet tried it in .44 yet, but let me tell you, this is my ONE AND ONLY .357 Mag powder!! I loaded some 140, 158, and 170gr. bullets, and all of them were super accurate, didn't need magnum primers, and was almost as fast as H-110, but with less pressure (in my opinion from shooting), and faster than 2400. Load data is rather limited, but AA recommends using data for AA No.9 and increasing that data by 3% (4100 is a tiny bit slower than No.9). This is shooting from my 6" bbl S&W M686. I am right now putting together some 240gr. JHP's for my 4" bbl. S&W M629 .44 Mag - I hope it performs as well as the .357 did!
