One More Year , I Hope!

Many companies have a surgeon locator feature on their web sight ! Check both of those companies I mentioned and Also Smith and Neohew and Zimmer!! Google the company and look for the. Surgeons in your aera ! There are not lots of Total. Shoulder specialists !! Google that surgeons practice! See what people think of his work !!

I have a completely trashed rt shoulder, not surgically repairable. Can't even go artificial its so bad. I killed decent 8 last year and thought prob last one with Hoyt Double XL. Hoyt BTW, awesome company! They made new limbs for me at 50-60 so I could try to keep shooting. Did not charge me a lot to do so! Very grateful!

But fast forward June 2022. Could not pull bow back at all. Shoulder killing me. Had to wait till August for steroid shot due to shot timing issue. Shot went fine and I waited till today to try to pull bow back at 52lbs.

Wow! I could not pull bow back in June, got steroid shot in late August and just shot 8 arrows in basement, no prob pulling back and shot pretty good! So now to outside in couple days and shoot 10, I hope at distance. It was so nice to be able to pull bow!

I have to baby the shoulder for hunting season and not over work it. I had no trouble hitting spots at 15 yds in basement so my form holds true. It should from shooting same form for 50 years!!

You cannot imagine the joy of being able to still pull bow back without screaming pain.

My mantra: One More Year!
Really sorry about the shoulder. Lost some of use of my rt arm during my military time. Had to switch to left shooting. Still not good at it, but what can you do. Can shoot with rt, but not more than 50-100 shots at a time. It trashes my arm for weeks if I try. Those steroid shots can work OK. The military witch doctors gave me to much

Really sorry about the shoulder. I can only imagine the pain from pulling back a bow, ouch! Lost some use of my rt arm/shoulder during my military time. Had to switch to left shooting. Still not great at it, but what can you do. Can shoot with rt, but not more than 25-50 shots at a time. It trashes my arm for weeks if I try. Those steroid shots can work OK. Better than cortisone. The military/VA witch doctors gave me too much cortisone over the years. Turns joints to mush. Made it worse over time. Hope your situation improves. Keep on hunting. Best of luck!

I have never bow hunted, but have had both shoulders operated on for rotator cuff tears. Right shoulder was a complete mess, worse shoulder that the orthopedic surgeon had ever seen. He removed about 1/2 spur from the shoulder and two spurs from my clavicle (I think that is correct) where the tendons connect to the shoulder. The right shoulder was done surgically in 2003 and has pretty much been rock solid after a lot of rehab. The left shoulder I had done in 2010 arthroscopic surgery and that I still have some issues with. To worsen the left side I tore a bicep tendon from the shoulder in 2018. Went to the doctor and he referred me to orthopedic surgeon. When I got to the orthopedic surgeon he could not do anything about the tendon? He told me that I had waited too long. Apparently, the surgery (Tommy John surgery) has to be done within 2 to 3 weeks of the injury. The referral was out a couple of months? I lost about 30% strength in my left arm and still have issues now with spasms and cramping (Charlie Horse).

Morale of my story is I am now 63 years young. Wish I would have filed a malpractice suit against my doctor at the time. I will never again take the word or diagnosis from a doctor for granted and do my own research. I use to be a bull and now I have to realize my limitations and let others be the bull!

Sorry to hear of your issues. That is why several friends have gone to crossbow hunting. They get another season, in addition to rifle, and overcome the shoulder issues with a compound. Good health is wasted on the young. We take for granted, don't appreciate what God gives until we lose it. Best wishes for your continued hunting and health.

Muddyboots, sorry to hear about your shoulder. I'm an ortho who does shoulder surgery and I'm in an area with plenty of bowhunters. Getting a bad shoulder to behave can be challenging, but it's quite unusual to have a problem so bad that there are no options. A crossbow is one potential solution. Around here you need a doctor's note to use one in an archery season - I write lots of those.

Seriously though, I'd recommend a second opinion with a shoulder specialist. There are darn few conditions that can't be improved. If it's really bad it's almost always possible to do a replacement. There are different types depending on your exact problem. In general, replacements are great at providing pain relief, but pulling back a heavy draw weight may or may not be realistic afterword. Find a surgeon who will listen and understand what you're trying to do.
Agree. I am a radiologist with a musculoskeletal fellowship. I have worked with several dozen orthopedic surgeons over the years. Some are outright lousy, most are adequate and conscientious, and a few are brilliant.

I needed knee replacement done on both knees 13 years ago. I talked to several physical therapists in our locale and asked which surgeons seem to get the fewest complications and the best rehab results. That search led me to one surgeon. Although not widely known in the area, he was; Fellowship trained in hip and knee replacement - check. 10 years experienced after training in his chosen subspecialty - check. And most important to me, all of the PT's that rehab'd his patients had seen a very low rate of complication and a very high rate of success - double check. His patients got back to their chosen activities faster, had less pain, less swelling post op, and seemed most satisfied with their result.

So he replaced both of my knees. I have been 100% happy with the results. I have since hunted sheep, elk, and deer, and done nearly everything I else I did before getting them replaced.

So if you can find a brilliant, shoulder fellowship trained, 10 years experienced shoulder surgeon who has impressed the local physical therapists, you should get a solid range of options that might keep you drawing your beloved Hoyt a few years more.

Keep us posted.

Best of Luck!!

Crossbow, I figure not what you want to do but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I tore my rotator cuff on right shoulder so took it easy and worked the crap out of my left shoulder. And now both are torn.
I went down from 60 lbs to 50 lbs on my Hoyt but came to the realization I couldn't shoot like I needed to. I broke down and bought a ten point crossbow last year.
It just ain't the same!
Enjoy your archery as long as you can cause you will definitely miss it once you can't do it! I know I do.
From one geezer to another...ya gotta be tough to get old...I am still shooting compound @ 50lb...not going cross bow until I have to

Craig:
I have had two Rotator Cuff surgeries on my left, one on my right and then a total on left. Had to sell my Outback which I loved to hunt turkeys with and also shot quite a few deer in early season or when I didn't want anyone to hear me.
Just go get a .410 ga single shot break open. Put an arrow in the Barrel and a shell with no shot. It is like the Extreme X-BOW but really cheap. You can make it quiet if you put an oil filter on the end of the barrel.
Seriously we will pray that the steroid shots last you get some long-lasting medical attention for you shoulder and you feel better for many years to come!

Does this really work????

Just kidding, I can see it happening all over America tomorrow. hahaha.

I know that the arrow in the .410 works because I saw it. I would think that the oil can would also work as a suppressor if you fitted correctly and had a hole for the arrow to go through. There are UTUBES on oil can suppressors, but would check with the ATF before making them.
