About recoil and being, a Gillette "Man" I put up with an, UN "Braked" .338 win Mag for 15 years ( Pre LimbSaver, too!). Recoil, will catch up to you, as it does to everybody,.. eventually !
Might want, to look into, WHAT Gillette does with, "YOUR", Dollars that, they make from us and WHO they DONATE, to ! I use Schick 2 blade, because I KNOW,.. what/who, those $$$'s get donated, to !

For the first time elk hunter I don't think there is a better cartridge than the .30-06. Stuffed with a 150-180 grain bullet of your choice. It will kill elk very dead in a wide range of conditions. I used one to kill quite a few elk using a 180 grain Core Lokt. Glad I didn't have the internet to let me know that combo wouldn't work. mtmuley

Soft living catches up to people a lot quicker.

And why shave? God didn't give us razors....

This is some solid advise. Loaded ammo literally available everywhere fo it as well. It's also what the outfitters I guided for usually recommended too.

.....I think some just need to sign up for the next Gillette commercial.....

I think some need to review marketing strategy, whatever losses Gillette experiences over this commercial, will be more than compensated in their line of women's products.
The pandering could also sell more men's razors, by the women who pick up the household shaving products during other shopping.

....and here I was blaming this mornings Advil deficiency on good motorcycles, bad horses, and tackling out of my weight class.

I prefer occasional aching over being a weak fatboy that fills my face with a BS diet and over relying on technology and my fellow man. Worse things in life than aching a little from hard living. Hard living also increases the "experience density" of one's life.

Lift weights
Chop wood and use a crosscut saw
Eat meat and fresh produce
Ease off the booz
Shoot big guns regularly
Shoot big elk often
Put the TV remote down, read a book
Work hard, work often
Go to church

OOps doubled up!

No TV, no wood stove, don't drink, one "real knee" left doesn't like kneeling much, still working full time, but the younger folks ask when I'm retiring pretty often. Try to hit it as best I can with a trainer twice a week. Could probably do better? yeah, but at this point "occasional aching" is a fond memory.

***ERROR- Switch "25-06" and "6.5X284" places, this is a mistake I can't edit - Sorry!***

This is or people that have not harvested an elk **
(Another poll will be created for those that have.)

Pretend you get chosen to go on a once in a lifetime Montana elk hunt in a district with all types of terrain, thick lodgepole to wide open plains. Choose the cartridge you take. (if your ideal cartridge isn't listed, pick the closest one to it).

Feel free to explain.

I believe that the 300 WinMag is the more potent round for elk hunting, however I have to take into account recoil factor. I feel very comfortable and confident shooting the 7mmRemMag more than the 300WinMag due to recoil. I also suspect that with my hunting experience, my longest, ethical shot would be within the 300-500 yard range. At the comfortable ranges that I feel confident with, I don't think that the elk will be capable of telling the difference of whether it was shot with the 7mmRemMag or the 300WinMag. I've never hunted elk, however have limited, first hand knowledge/experience with caribou. Our hunting party was comprised of six hunters, two 7mmRemMags, two 300WinMags, one 340Wetherby and one 30-06. The 7mmRems were using Federal Premium 160 grain bullets, both the 300WinMags were 180 grain Nosler partitions, I don't know what the 340 Weatherby or the 30-06 ammunition was. I was totally impressed with the exit holes with the 7mm RemMags. The shots were within 200-300 yards. I took two caribou, the first at about 80 yards with the 300WM, quartering shot, entered center cavity and exited behind the rib cage, had to look for the exit hole. The second caribou was estimated to be 130 yards with the same results. Both animals took only a couple of steps, just not impressed with the exit holes. This is my one time experience with the 7mmRemMag on an animal larger than a white tail deer. So for me my choice was made due to accuracy with confidence with the 7mmRemMag, less recoil and my limited ability to take a shot further than 500 yards.
