My wife just bought me a birthday/Father's Day present in the form of a HELLE GT hunting knife.

->This knife is made in Norway and has a laminated blade with hard, high carbon steel in the center for an edge that stays sharp and softer steel laminated on each side for flexible strength. This is an expensive process. American made Morseth custom knifes had the same kind of blades.

->The 4 5/8" blade is d@mned sharp and has a full tang with a birchwood burl wood handle. I plan to glue a slice of antler on the pommel end for looks and a slightly better grip.

->The leather sheath is beautifully made from full grain cowhide.

Yeah, with the sheath it's heavier than the knife it replaces but is so beautiful that I can't leave it at home. BTW, not all HELLE knives have laminated blades.
The photo in the Piragis catalog does not do it justice. The knife literally has to be held to appreciate its beauty and quality.
I have many other very good knives like a Russell Canadian belt knife and others but this HELLE knife is my favorite.

We got it in Boulder, Colorado at the Fjell Raven store but you can order it from Priagis Northwoods Catalog in Minnesota. Not a cheap date but is a true keepsake knife you can proudly hand down to kids and grandkids.

Love the tool steels!

@Litehiker where's the pic? Your post reminds me that I really want to try a Roselli. I think they're made in Finland, but Helle, Roselli? (I'm a dork)

Helle knives are awesome. Have three different ones. All have laminated blades and will take and hold a razor edge. Good choice.

Love Helle knives. (Helps that I am Norwegian)
I use a Harmoni as my hunting knife, replacing my Benchmade Saddle Mountain.

I love carbon steel, it's a little more maintenance, but love the patina.
I'm a big fan of 1084 and 15n20. Here's a couple I've been messing around with in lately. They aren't a Helle by any means, but they cost me about 4 bucks to make and they're tougher than nails!!!

Those are NICE looking knifes

I have collected a few custom knives for many years now and a few years back I took my Ruana SS knife hunting and lost it.My back pack broke at the seam and I lost a bunch of stuff. It snowed 3 feet where I was and could not find anything so I waited until spring and went back and found my Ruana knife and compass.
The Ruana custom knife is a forged blade that Rudy Ruana took all the Studebaker Spring steel he could find and forged a series of knives call the SS version. He built them between the 1930's until mid 1940's and stopped as I recall so its worth some money and I was glad to get it back and it has not moved from my knife collection box.
It is super hard to dull and after skinning and cutting up 2 elk and several muley deer it was still fairly sharp.I sharpened it and haven't used it since.
There are good knives and then there are GREAT Knives and Helle knifes are GREAT Knives.I don't have one but it's on my list.
Enjoy it.

If you like getting your knives absolutely stupid sharp as I do, look into the wicked edge knife sharpening system, they are expensive but give you complete control of your edge geometry. Most normal knives have around a 40 degree inclusive or combined angle on the edge.
I take the primary to 25 degrees and then put a 28 degree micro bevel on them for hunting knives. It's incredible what this does for cutting, I'll take my kitchen knives down to 22 degrees and 2000 grit with kangaroo leather strop to finish them.
These things will go the bone and you won't even feel it!!! (ask me how I know)
Sorry for geeking out you guys, I sort of like knives and jump at the opportunity to run my mouth about them!!
This is a gyuto I made for my sister in law, first try at a chef's knife, it turned out alright.

Helle knives are fantastic. I have a skinner that I love. Be careful, they're so sharp they can cut you if you look at them wrong!!

That's cool! I really like the look of the Helle knives! I was debating getting a Helle but instead, i decided to get a TOP's lite trekker and a Baja 4.5 to try out as big brother camp chore knives. I'm actually liking the Baja better though it is a little heavier and bigger.
