So I have been on here (as a posting member) for a few weeks now. I had come across the page every now and then as part of a web search. And usually found the reading excellent. I never joined as my shooting and hunting had never been "Long Range". My recent acquisition of a 300 Win Mag prompted me to actually join. I have reloaded for 9, 40, 45, 357, 44, 223, 243, 260, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5 Creed, 7mm-08. But this is my first belted. I knew they head spaced on the belt, which was new for me. But I found info that concerned me, like REALLY short brass life.

A question I have that has not been answered yet, is why factory ammo has the shoulder in one spot (2.260-2.265) and factory chambers can be as mach as .020" longer to the same datum point on the shoulder (2.280-2.285). No wonder why brass life is so short if you "full length resize to factory" specs.

Armed with my Hornady gauges. My setup revealed factory ammo from head to a .420" diameter on the shoulder of 2.26-2.265", the fired brass that came with the gun, that was fired in that gun, measured with the same gauge was 2.28-2.282", some brass I acquired here from another member also measured as much as 2.285", and they chambered in my rifle no problem. So I purcahsed some Peterson "Long" brass. These brand new brass measured 2.28" and they chambered fine. So I guess the plan is to just shoulder bump fired brass to 2.28 and hope a bulge does not form above the belt, and deal with that when the time comes..

I believe it started with the 300 H & H magnum and the 375 H & H belted magnums, since there was no shoulder to head space off of. Then it was believed the belt made the case stronger. I use the below to resize all the way to the belt, but still just bump the shoulders.002

Well been here off and on, over the years. But never owned a "long range weapon" till moving to Nebraska. I do have lots of reloading experience (9,40,45,357,44,223,243). This is one forum where I can learn more than help.

TR1 / Nebraska : welcome from Hudson River area, enjoy your stay with us. Thanks for your service brother. big change from the 20MM
I removed and installed the gun and loaded 30mm on the A-10 for about a year and a half. The rest of my 24 years was on F-15 A/B/C/D, needless to say, I know its weapons system like the back of my hand. I joined when Reagan was president and was force retired under Obama. Nothing like watching an F-15C taking off at night in AB with Northern lights above your head in Iceland.

my cousins husband was stationed in Iceland back in the early 70's- some times back then.!!
They probably had F-4's, maybe even F-106's, back then. We were flying Eagles. I was there July 92-July 93. It doesnt near as cold as people think, it gets much colder here in the plains states. I think the coldest it got was 19* but the wind blows 20-30 a LOT. The warmest it got was 65* middle of July, people wore shorts.

He was one heck of a welder, could run an aluminum bead forever. He built a Tuna Tower for one of my boats back then ( did one heck of a job ) guys wanted him to build for them, he lived way up-state NY at that time , some 250 miles away.

But one hack of a welder the service taught him that- stick-mig-tig did it all.

I just got done wleding the push bar on our dirt track push truck, flux core mig, they are not the prettiest but I am not worried about them failing. Welding is as much art as skill, seems like the new welders are getting easier to use. Or maybe it is just cool to post weld porn these days...lol
