So a 16" gets 2750 at 50 fps loss or possibly 2550 with a 100 fps loss. Now you're back to non magnum velocity with a heck of a lot more powder and blast. You can be pretty close to that velocity with non magnums I can tell you for a certainty an unsuppressed 260/308 in a 16" hurts me to shoot with double ear protection.

I rarely shoot my guns that aren't suppressor ready anymore because I dont care for the blast. I think OP said he was looking at 16.5" barrel.

What if it keeps the same separation it currently does at 20"? That's 200fps difference.

I don't have experience with anything shorter than 20" in a magnum so I wouldn't be bold enough to say that you would use 40% more powder to be in the same velocity range.

i also plan to run suppressed 100%of the time. And I believe it's closer to 25-50 FPS per inch. Putting you closer to 2800 FPS. Even at 2750 in a 16.5 inch set up I'd be thrilled.

The can should add some speed too. It does in my experience. Kind of a freebie.

I've had 2 6.5ss. My current is maxed out at 2950 with a 140 Berger suppresses in a 20" barrel. My last one wouldn't hit 3050 with a 24" barrel. I'm sure you put enough powder in it it'll reach 3000 fps but I doubt it's an accuracy node. unlike a lot of sherman loads I see, my brass doesn't have ejector marks, faint or not. I can drop my mag in a bucket of water and not have my bolt seize up, would be interesting to see if some of these other customers could do the same.

You're not alone, neither of my two Sherman cases have lived to the hype. Crossing my fingers the 3rd does. It may be wishful thinking tho.

To the OP. Check to see if Bartlein will even make a barrel that short. When I ordered 4 carbon barrels from them, 20-26" was all they offered upon first day of announcing their availability. I'd personally say the 6.5 SS or SST will give best performance in a short action and still allow you to load heavier bullets out of powder space. Hopefully you have better luck with Straight Jacket than I have. 3 different jobs, and 3 major let downs. I won't touch em again and they even offered me a free rebarrel from the shoddy workmanship.

If you are going short action I don't see any issues with a sherman short or tactical. They are great in the fact you can use them in a short action and still get really great results.

Also, seems to be a lot of guys having issues with 6.5 prc sizing does not sizing the case properly and being stuck with clickers. Not sure if it's super common or not but I see it trending here lately with guys getting in 6x or so firings.

i really wish you would spin a 300ss up in a short action and play with some 200.20x or 205 bergers and then post your results haha

If you haven't already, I'd also recommend taking a look at the Rugged Radiant Suppressor. It is advertised to be rated up to 300RUM with no barrel restrictions.

I was finally able to pick up my Rugged Radiant this July and I've been very impressed with it. That being said, I have not been able to put it on any of my magnum calibers yet.

good point, I've never run a suppressor so I will have to look into this a lot more. The whole point is a semi light weight compact rifle that will fit Inside my pack, that will still get it done on mule deer at 3-400 yards. And I want a full time suppressor on it. 308 has been my plan from the start, but then started thinking maybe a 6.5 mag of some sort. Still open to the 308. but your point is why I ask on here!

You can go down to 18" with a 6.5 SAUM with a TBAC Dominus.

I posted this before. Have 18" and 19" 6.5x47 setup relatively light. UL7 on both. The 18" shoots 140 vld right at 2700 fps. At about 10,500 last fall watched my son bust an onside bull elk shoulder at 400 yards. Bullet was under hide on far side behind opposite shoulder. I find these rifles to be incredibly comfortable to shoot and effective to longer ranges than most would think.

I built a 6.5-284 at 23" and trying it suppressed this fall. If too cumbersome will chop it back to 20".

7mm-08 or 284 win will serve you well from shorter barrel.
I hunt with 17" 7mm-08, 16.5" 260 and 11.5" Grendel with great results on whitetails and coyotes. The foot long Grendel is awesome in blinds and walking in the woods and comes right at 16" with my shorty can and wouldn't hesitate to use it 250-300 yards.
I've just had Fierce 300 WSM cut down to 21"as a compromise to handiness/performance, but have not shot it yet. Should work well with 180gr bonded bullets or 165gr solids

We have guys running the 156 up to 3000' with the156 and not throwing their brass away with a 20". So you're wrong!
I hear this stuff from people, mostly who have never shot one, and customers prove them wrong all the time. Ask some smiths who have built them.

Just my two pennies worth but the Plain Jane 308 is the least temperamental about barrel length IMO, I had a 16' 308 suppressed that we shot out to 1000 meters and I've always built my own form 1's that I have used on a 300 RUM with no complications at all, Just Sayin

I cut down a 23.5" medium palma Bartlein 6.5 Creed on my Tikka to 18". Still getting 2715 with the 143 ELDX, RL16, and Peterson SRP brass that was 2815 when the barrel was 23.5". Makes it much handier with the 30P1 and will be even shorter with the Dominus SR when it gets approved. Going to work up a load with the 130gr Norma Golden Target for deer. They dropped everything that two of my sons and I have shot with them out of the old Prime load. Always have had exits too.
