What if it keeps the same separation it currently does at 20"? That's 200fps difference.None, I dont see the point really. But necessary and just want to do it is a decision for the individual. If your Sherman is running 2950 in a 20" will it lose 50 to 100fps per inch shorter? So a 16" gets 2750 at 50 fps loss or possibly 2550 with a 100 fps loss. Now you're back to non magnum velocity with a heck of a lot more powder and blast. You can be pretty close to that velocity with non magnums I can tell you for a certainty an unsuppressed 260/308 in a 16" hurts me to shoot with double ear protection.

I rarely shoot my guns that aren't suppressor ready anymore because I dont care for the blast. I think OP said he was looking at 16.5" barrel.
I don't have experience with anything shorter than 20" in a magnum so I wouldn't be bold enough to say that you would use 40% more powder to be in the same velocity range.
