Need yalls opinion on a new deer/varmit/ Rem. build....

Yes Mud! You are right! We all in some shape an form are guilty of bias! That said, time to move on. Dust270wsm, just my 2cts, my vote goes to the 260 or 260 AI. If you want to load for it to suit you, you can!! Great!! Like was mentioned if you go on a hunt and run out of ammo, factory ammo will still work! Best of both worlds! Again, just my 2cts!!

So it's a short action then? What bolt face?

If its a short action .308 bolt face then go with a .243 or .260, standard or AI. I don't have time to fireform anymore so I'm opting for standard these days.

If its a long action standard bolt face then a .270 Win. gun)

For LA standard, I suggest .280 Ackley Improved. Especially since you can buy Nosler .280 AI brass already pre-formed.

I think any of the rounds mentioned up to this point would meet the requirements youve set. Im pretty partial to all calibers from the 08 case, they are all easy to use and you have a big selection of componets.

Ackley Improving is not that hard to do, and it's really not that time-consuming. Especially if you use the cream of wheat method. I don't, I just use bullets & shoot a reduced load to fire-form brass. But I also have no problem buying a 100 pack of cheap Hornady Interlocks for $25 from my local store, using a 2/3 load of surplus Alliant powders I have laying around, that I don't use for any of my good loads anymore, since they're all temp sensative, and using cheap CCI primers. :D

Using an "AI" is an attempt at making a cartridge do something it wasnt designed ( and even maybe) to do. The next up the scale in size cartridge will do "IT" better.

This is true, but if you get it figured out, maximizing all the effective space in your given case is what Ackley was trying to do. Which is why the .25-06 AI is a more efficient Ackley than say a .30-06 AI... Although, I am getting some pretty wicked velocity estimates from my .30-06 AI with the 185 VLD's, compared to a regular .30-06 Sprg.

And honestly, just having that "cool" factor is what part of it's about. I like having unique and different calibers. Which is why I like the Ackleys. Plus, I have always been into hotrods, and anytime I can modify something to make it a little bit better, I am all for it. Just like P.O. did with the Ackley chamberings....He took the factory case, and made it better. :D

My sentiments exactly:D
Well, feel that if you like, it's your thoughts, but facts are facts. Both being good calibers. It's almost pointless to argue them. The fact is, that the .260 will produce more velocity because of its greater powder capacity. But that being said, I don't think either cartridge is inherently more accurate than the other, since any cartridge has the capability of being accurate, depending on how accurate the weapon it's used in is.

..old Rem 700 back to life...
Yeah baby
...Was thinking a 243ackley or something similar. Wanna be able to shoot around 55 grainers at yotes and have the ability to up the bullet weight in the fall for deer. ...
There are many choices
...So which caliber would u go with??...
243, 257, 264 or 277
...What stock? ?...
Houge, B&C or Boyds.
...And what barrel??...
Pac-Nor, Krieger, Benchmark or Bartlien, Shillen
Ect..Ect on what yall would do if u have a 700action..
If it were me:
Caliber/chambering: 257 Roberts or 257 Robers AI
Barrel profile: fluted sendoro or palma
Length: 26 to 28
Cheap project: Shillen barrel, boyds stock
Medium: Benchmark or Bartlien, B&C or Houge stock and a Timney trigger.
Expensive: Pac-Nor or Krieger and any number of chassis systems and a Jewell trigger.

Have fun!

I suggest a Pacnor barrel with their "rem-nut" so you can assemble and head space it yourself with simple tools, and rebarrel to whatever, whenever the mood strikes you. I am currently assembling a 280 Ackley on a savage 111, with a Boyd's Tacticool stock, JP brake, and RifleBasix SAV2 trigger. You can do all of that with your Remington action...

Just caught up to all of this again! Great tread! Good info! Just read that the OP has a 30,06 length action!!! :) I'm changing my vote to 280 AI, hands down!! You can buy ammo for it or load your own(forming the cases is not hard an there are company's that make brass for it) omg no fire forming!! Can't go wrong with it!! Everything from rats to deer!!! 280 AI on a standard action IMO is the way to go! As far as extras, it's the OP's choice!!! It's all good!!!! IMO!!
