Hello all,

I'm in the market for a new hunting rifle, chambered in 7mm rem mag. I hunt black bear, deer and elk and I would like accuracy capabilities on game out to 500-600 yards and steel out to around 1,000. I plan to use handloads as well.

I had my eyes on the Bergara B14 Hunter, but just recently heard some less than satisfactory things about them and I am now directing my eyes elsewhere. For my budget, I'd like to stay under $700, but if it's really worth it I can move up to $800.

Please let me know your recommendations.

Much appreciated!

I almost scored a Steyr Pro Hunter 7mm mag for 450, but it was scooped up before I could get to the store. I found a Tikka T3x in 30-06 instead. Trigger, ergonomics, accuracy are excellent. The one thing that wrecks it for me is that the rounds in the magazine when the bolt is closed suffer dented bullet tips on recoil. A call to Beretta/Tikka customer support resulted in a response "it is what it is, there's nothing to do about it", really turned me off.

Re-barreling yours is a good choice or i have a Montana 1999 stainless in 7 mag, shot around 50 times to fireform the brass and break in the barrel, Talley 30mm rings with box and papers for 1150.

Browning X-Bolt Hell's Canyon Long Range. You get a 26" pipe to get your full velocity that you can't get too many other places besides sloppy Remington and sloppy Savage. Yes, I said it. Sloppy Savage. You may get a good one now and again since they've been bought out, but quality control and customer service have gone down the tubes. And they don't honor their rebates, either. I've had a half dozen in the past year and 1 of them shot well. From 338 Federal to 6mm Creedmoor and everything in between.

Anyways, the X-Bolt HC LR has a slightly heavier barrel than pencil thin standard, AND something you WON'T get anywhere else unless you build a custom is a 1:8 Twist! You can go as heavy as you want for LR shooting or heavy hitting bear stoppers. Weight is a manageable 7 1/2 lbs. And to muddy the water a little for you, you can have the same fun in same specs in a .28 Nosler! Street price on this model is between $1050 and $1150, so it's a little more, but darn well worth it. Haven't had an X-Bolt yet that wouldn't reach sub-1/2 MOA all the way up including 325 WSM! That was in thin hunter model. Browning honors their rebates 100%, too! Have received 5 in the past 2 years!

Your choice, make it a good one!

Question
The OP also isn't asking about what caliber he should choose. Sounds like he's decided that already.
I really like to recommend an X-BOLT for factory long range shooting, especially with the new fast twist barrels. But, they are out of your budget by about $400.

You're best bet on that budget is a 700 long range, and shoot a 168 vld or162 eld-m

So, I see the X-BOLT Composite Stalker online in 7mm. Now, my question is with the 9.5 twist, what's the heaviest bullet I can stabilize? I was planning to load 168gr Noslers with it.

Otherwise, the Rem 700 LR looks promising, but what should I expect to "upgrade" on it? Trigger? Anything else?

The 9.5 twist will stabilize the 168s. X-bolts are awesome. Factory trigger will get you down around 3lbs. If you want lighter you can install an Mcarbo trigger spring.

The rem 700 will need a trigger. Timneys can be had for around $100 and they are easy to install yourself. The bell and carlson stocks that come on it are pretty nice.

I have rem 700 and tikka's t3 and t3x . The rem700 is sub moa with a bull barrel , and the same for the tikka's . I put a couple of bell and Carlson stocks on them and they are great . The action and lock on bolt is very nice on the tikka . I found my bolt moved a few times hunting with the rem700.

T/C Venture and Tikka are hard to beat. Also for a little more $ the Browning Xbolt, lots of models to choose from in your price range. I have all of these I've indicated and they all are great rifles. With a little know how and an aftermarket spring all these triggers can be greatly improved for less than $20.

Dang too bad nobody had any suggestions :D
These threads are always F ___ing hilarious..

Love my older Sendero in 7mmrm but it's a tank. My oldest son got the Browning X-bolt hells canyon speed (not the long range) it's pretty good. Heloaded 168 Berger .020 jump with 72 grains of Retumbo. Shoots sub moa and still hasn't really dialed it in. The action is excellent! But trigger is not bad but heavy. He did good shooting steel with it . Cold bore 1100 yards. I'm now saving up for an x bolt.
