Neck Shot Disappointment

I see the ignorance continues around neck shots so here's a little update as I take apart my neck shot buck thats been hanging a few days.
With the shoulders removed you can cleary see the entrance and would channel where the 180 vldh totally blew through the 100% meaty area of the neck.
My butcher knife is sunk into where the neck/spine bone begins.

From what guys are saying about neck shots this buck shouldn't be hanging here right now..
Come on guys the OP's issue was the bullet construction, not talking a neck shot.
Shoot them in the neck all day with rapid expansion bullets, if you're a mono or bonded fan boy then don't.

I think you are misunderstanding many of the posts. No one is saying you can't kill deer that way. Of course you can kill deer with a neck shot, and many, many deer have been killed like that. But that doesn't mean it is foolproof either, and you are focusing on the extremes. Folks are debating the shades of gray in the space between the extremes.

Sorry I thought the extreme was people claiming if you miss the spine then you aren't getting a kill, and therefore its a tiny kill zone making it an unethical shot.
Am I missing something? Cuz everyone is piling on the OP for taking a shot that is very ethical with the proper bullet, my shot placement proves this.
Nothing is fool proof, which is why blanket statements saying never take neck shots is so ignorant

One shot doesn't prove anything.

It's not a bullet issue.

A certain percentage of the time we won't make the shot we want. Doesn't matter which one we take, some are higher percentage, and with bigger margins.

An easy test would be to put up a deer target, set up as it presented, take 100 shots, and decide how satisfied you are to take it routinely in the field.

^^^ That right there.

The OP has shot a ton of animals with a neck shot, this is the first that didnt drop right there.
Even when shooting for the lungs or shoulder, poo sometimes happens and things go south.

Maybe bullet or cartridge selection would have made a difference, maybe not.

How many times have you all seen a gut shot animal, or maybe a leg or shoulder shot but not fatal

Get over it and choose your target based on YOUR experience and quit trying to impose your ethics on others.

**** that's well said sir

I made that same mistake with a 350 Legend. Knocked deer down. Was certain it was dead down the sendero. Nope, never to be seen again. WON'T DO IT AGAIN.

I dont see the need to roast the guy and try to force your ethics on him.

Would I ever take that shot? No. But I know a lot of guys who have done very well with it, and he obviously has had very good success with it, too.

Does the shoulder shot guarantee success? Hell, no!

What next, you gonna tell him what caliber and gun to shoot?
I think we come on here to voice our opinions and to hear others opinions. To try and silence someone for voicing their thoughts on any subject is wrong, if someone doesn't like what they are reading then they can skip right over the post and not read it. But you seem to be roasting Clem, doing exactly what you are saying shouldn't happen.

We also found that its wise to never take a side shot when going for the neck.
X2, IMO full broadsides are for lung punches, unless they're feeding hard and you can get a cross-head shot. I shoot necks when the animal is at an angle. You don't have to go out looking for one particular shot, you get to choose what to shoot for every presentation. When I take a neck shot there's no one sitting there with me egging me on for it, I make the best decision I can at the time.

I have not seen a single one since the big freeze
They're like rats, they're still all over. Seems like places that had water that didn't freeze solid did a lot better. Not sure if that's just a temperature anomaly thing where they could bed down and stay relatively warmer, or actually related to the water. I about ran over one in Bandera last week. And by "in Bandera" I mean IN Bandera, on 16 by the strip mall where Fat Boyz is.

Where in my post did I force my ethics on him? I don't tell anyone what shot to take- that is entirely up to them.
