My Rem 700 FIRED on Bolt Closing!!

You will never see me even considering a Rem 700, and when I do have friends that hunt with a Rem 700, blueprinted or not, they stay in front of or far away from me. It is an unsafe, unstable action and in my opinion should be recalled over the safety problems associated with the action.

My Model 70 has never misfired, nor have I heard of it happening. I am sure somewhere it has happened, but the model 700 is notorious for misfires. Get rid of it.

Hello Fellas,

This was a one-time occurrence but my Rem 700 fired when I closed the bolt.

The rifle has a Trigger Tech Trigger and the action has been blueprinted. The ONLY thing different about this incident was that I was chambering a round that I didn't FL size down to the base, and I was having difficulty closing the bolt on it. Actually, I had to push the bolt forward very strongly and I was in the process of forcing the bolt down when it went off. It fired the second the bolt was down all the way.

That said, I don't think that it should have fired but I would like to hear what you guys think, and if this is "normal" because of what I did or if there is something wrong with the gun. I have several hundred rounds through the rifle and this has never happened

What do you say??
get a jewel or timney trigger

Had a Trigger Tech Special and it kept dropping the pin when bolt was closed. Sent it back. Heard the Diamonds are quite nice.

Dang!!!

You all have me all worried now . I was excited about my new triggers ,lol . I have two new TTechs Specials now . One is currently getting installed in a custom build. The other is back ordered at Brownells. I'll be sweating every time I close my bolts now

Nothing wrong with trigger tech. Can be a whole host of issues. I saw a Bergara premier fire at a comp when the competitor closed his bolt. I'm not swearing off Bergara.

Did MSNBC get to you?

I had a Jewell that did that a couple of times when I was at the range on a really windy, dusty day. Luckily I was shooting prone, and not walking around with the rifle, but it scared the **** out of me. I second guessed myself the first time it happened, and thought maybe I had somehow touched the trigger, but I put it in back in the case after the second occurrence. I didn't realize how sensitive they were, or how often they needed to be flushed out. None of my hunting rifles have Jewells now, for obvious reasons.

Reading this thread has stressed me out a bit. I have a knowledgeable friend at my deer camp who is a reloader and has a world of experience with guns. One day he pushed the saftey off on his Remington 700 to shoot a deer and the rifle fired as soon as he pushed the saftey off. After he got back to camp, he took it apart and found a little hard round weed seed in the trigger group. We both agreed that this little ball-shaped seed had gotten caused the discharge. The only thing keeping it from firing sooner was the saftey being on. After this he put in a new aftermarket trigger in his 700.

I personally know of dozens of unintentional discharges with Remington 700's. I am glad that I have a Winchester Model 70 270 WSM. My gunsmith put an aftermarket trigger in and adjusted it perfectly for me. I cannot remember what brand it is, but I have complete confidence in it over the years used.

I know the problem can be corrected. But I wonder why anyone would buy a 700 today when there are so many options with good actions, triggers and barrels available for the same or even less money. I think there are designs today that are better than the old 700, even though it has been very popular and has served many well.

Yes I will contact TT but I have a trip coming up in 3 weeks so I am going to be careful and cross my fingers for now:(

I played with it for 1/2 hours now. It will only fire 1in 10 times if I slam the bolt closed as hard as I physically can.

I have it set at @ 2.75LBS

I should be ok for my trip.

Dude, swap out that trigger assembly ASAP !! Or Are you going to explain to someone's grieving family that it was only unsafe 10% of the time? That's like your girlfriend telling you she is only 10% pregnant !!! SE <><

I would just use a different rifle. Could be a timing issue.

Use CCI #34 primer

I has a bent spring on one of my Gieselle Match triggers. I called and left a message about 0715, by 0735 Bob Gieselle called me himself. He said "send it back to me now and I will send you a brand new one overnight, I'll trust you to return the bad one to me." I had it the next day!!! No way they want the liability of having a bad one out there. Do not chamber a round with a known bad trigger or even one with a bent spring...Thanks Bob for your service

I had the same problem on my 710. You have to set it to 3 lbs and the over sensitivity goes away. When mine happened it was on a 300 win mag. Talk about a surprise!
