A practical and straightforward cartridge. I was happy to learn that one can fire .458 win mag and .458 Lott in the .450 ackley chamber without issue (though the 458 win looks kinda funny after with a shoulder formed just a few mm behind the case mouth should one do this in an emergency)
I doubt I'm ever going to Africa. What did you hunt there!?

That's where I got the idea for the name! I had a 7#, 458 Win Mag for a while that I only shot 500gr bullets out of. I'm still convinced that one gave me a few concussions.Your username seems appropriate to this confession

I made a 458WM for an African hunt that I never went on, the rifle sat in the gun vault for 20 years until a couple of years ago, I made a 300WM out of it. I do have a bad shoulder that can't take the punishment so I put on a thick pad and built my own brake for it, which controlled the recoil so I could shoot it with a full 458WM load and 500gr solid.
After the African hunt fell through I downloaded to a modern 45-70 load 350gr and deer hunted with it in heavy trees, but I never got to shoot a deer with it.
If you want a challenge by all means have a smith put a thin pad or metal plate on the stock and take that brake off, I'm sure your shoulder will love it then.

It's so dang pretty I don't think I'll let any modification be done! My 458 Lott. It was built for a South African PH who passed on before it was finished.

Interesting!! What's the benefit of a titanium firing pin on a rifle like this? I understand some bench shooters like them for supposedly quicker lock time.

Actually your .40 can be a new Hankins SML.Now the irrational ocd part of me "needs" a belted magnum in .40 caliber haha. I have a .257 wby, a .300 win, a .358 Norma, and this .450 ackley….25, 30, 35, 45…..where's the .40!?!!!!????

I also was browsing the Winchester catalogue the other day and see they're currently producing the 1895 in both "high grade" and "grade 1" versions in .405 Winchester!!!! Now that would be sweet!!!!Actually your .40 can be a new Hankins SML.
