My Buddy Shawn AKA Hired Gun...

Shawn and I known each other for about 23 years, we have shared some great experience and very good times from hunting, and shooting to scuba diving, jeep racing, and lots of other stuff I can say he is my oldest and dearest friend.

Shawn is a very knowledgeable person and I have learned a lot from him over the years he is a great fabricator and welder.

About 16 years ago Shawn was involved in a motorcycle accident, which left him with the use of only one arm. This guy has the most positive attitude of any one I know he really never let his disability get him down. Some years after his accident I convinced him to try shooting long guns again, He tried it and it seemed to work for him that year he took a nice three point buck at about 300 yards if I remember correctly.

Since this time Shawn has gotten into long-range hunting and shooting infact he is responsible in getting me into it. Shawn with the use of only one arm can out shoot 99 % of the people that I have met in person that shoot.

Shawn shot his cow elk at 479 yards yesterday a big congratulation to him. I would have been there to help in anyway that I could but I was up to my armpits in guts on my own elk.

Good Job Shawn! I'm not sure how I would handle the hand you've dealt, but you attitude is awesome! You're a great inspiation. Keep up the good shooting and hope you bag some nice critters.

You're right ebd 10...Especially considering all of the obstables he's overcome!

I'll tell you one thing...If I was in his shoes, I don't know if I could be as positive and upbeat as he is!

However...God has a plan for everbody.

And everything happens for a reason.

And I think Shawn's reason is to be an inspiration to not only disabled-hunters, but to ALL of us who hunt out there!

Once again, CONGRAT'S Shawn...and I hope to see more of your long-range kills on here!

He is on here Eddie he goes by the handle Hired Gun!!! He posted on this thread. http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f17/300-rum-vs-300wby-mag-35534/index7.html He just kind of keeps his disability low key. I guess he doesn't want anyone to feel sorry for him, I can say this he makes the most out of life and has a very positive attitude.

To tell the truth I get angrier then he does about his disability. Which I know is awful selfish of me.

Hi guys,
Well I guess the cat's out of the bag now. I really appreciate the kind words. Those that know me know I'm rarely at a loss for words but since this thread started I have wanted to say something but still can't seem to put anything together that all that inspirational. I can't say having the use of one hand is a picnic but having great friends and a supportive wife and family has made it bearable. I really do enjoy the challenge of shooting long range and from this site I have gained the knowledge required to be able to extend my personal effective range by a factor of at least 2. I try to share our sport whenever I can. I regularly invite strangers I encounter on public lands to take a whack at my portable gongs with my rifle or will show them how to do it with their own.

The cow this year was the 2nd elk since I was injured in 93 and only my 3rd elk ever. Hunting from a vehicle and only being able to shoot from the window or off a portable table really limits my opportunity even if the game is present. BTW this was my longest big game kill ever. I wasn't looking to go long but the only shot opportunity I got just happened to come at 479 yards this year. Since stalking is rather difficult for me, being proficient at long range increases my chances of actually bagging one once in awhile. I also really enjoy just getting out with my son and friends to spend the time in the woods or range shooting anytime we can.

Again thanks for the encouragement. I would really love to share a campfire with any of you sometime. You too Larry, if I can ever get you off the ranch.

I would add that Shawn was very helpful to me when I had a reloading decision to make and he gave me some good advice which I took.

A very nice story and it just goes to show that there are some really great people on this forum.
