Most powerful lever action cartridge

Look, it's not an argument of relevance or practicality; it's power and capability. To that end it is perfectly suited to talk about what has been done. Over many, many penetration tests and tissue destruction tests, and medium speed, heavy 458 has proven champion. That very same load set the record for penetration at Linbaugh (beating 458 Lott and WM by 1.5 to 2 feet). So if I was to choose a rifle for such a purpose, the fast handling and fast follow up capabilities of a good 45-70 are right at the very top of my list.

The choice is wise. Even if not the absolute top of the performance charts, it's a wise balance indeed.

Well for over the counter amo get almost anyplace amo my bet would have to be on a lever gun that shoots a 600 grain pill at About 1650 FPS. O and you can by the gun For under 325.00 USD NEW..

When you talk most powerfull are we talking a custom gun or a factory made one? The reason I ask is Anything can be made custom...

What rifle is $325 new, and factory ammo 600 grains?

Its called a 12 gauge. So its not a rifle its that what yall are looking for. Century Arms PW87 Lever action 5 shot 12 gauge.

I will admit. It would not have the penetration as the big rifles. BUT it has a lot of foot pounds and makes a big hole.

Not enough penetration indeed, especially on hard bone...it would be near or at zero in some cases. But not as powerful as either of the top 3 contenders. My personal 45-70/457WWM loads have touched 5000 lb/ft.

That is a lot of energy.

Some of the common discoveries were as you would expect. For instance, since bolt thrust (maximum) is a constant, increasing the cartridge diameter yielded no net gain of energy. The higher pressure and faster powders in the 45-70 created more efficiency and negated the gain of larger case capacity in the Alaskan cartridges. We seen gains with larger bore (.458 vs .500/.510) in shorter barrels, and this has strong advantages, but costs in penetration and range. The speed drops with very heavy bullets in 458, where the 50s handled the same weight well. Take into consideration the longer actions or action tuning must be applied to both. Over all the lengthened 45-70 seemed to be the best performer. Even in just the WWM chamber, I drove GS Custom 400s at 2275, 350s at 2500, and 300s at 2700+
