Modify custom action ?

Here's a photo. The scope is a Zeiss V6 3-18x50mm.

You are almost out of room to move anyway because of the front scope ring. if that 1/4" makes it work for you, I'd file the angle on the front of the rail. If you need more than that, you will also need a narrower set of rings. Or you could shorten the LOP a little to get closer to the scope.

One last question before I put a tool to this rifle - Using a feeler gauge, I find that there is exactly .008" of clearance. That is considerably less clearance than on any other rifle I've set up in the past. Is it enough to prevent contact between the rail and the scope under recoil? The rifle is chambered in 280AI.

This would have been a lot easier if the pic rail was separate. Not fond of the idea of grinding away on a custom action. LOL

Send that picture to defiance and maybe at some point they can change future actions to be beveled on the front of rail.
By the way I'm with the guys who say file it and make it work

My father shimed a set of redfield rings on a pre 64 over 50 years ago. A drop of lock tight blue on each one torqued and still shoots straight.

.008" of clearance is exactly that, clearance. It's enough given where it is and how stiff everything is in that area. Put a couple layers of masking tape between and shoot it, you will see that it's fine.
