Long throat 223 Remington match

Yep. I can't see a 20" running 2700 ever with staball. I'm using hodgdon data.
I'm not sure staball 6.5 is the right powder for a 223. I have attached Hornadys load data for 5.56mm nato with 20" barrel. I plan to build my gun with a 223 Wylde but have my gunsmith do a longer freebore bades on my longer magazine.

NATO vs 223 is a huge difference in pressure.

Might wanna look at hodgdon data and see what it shows for staball. Their data seems to disagree

223 wylde is designed to be compatible with 5.56 NATO as far as I understand. If you read my attachment it discusses the pressure difference. The main difference between 223 rem and 5.56 is actually freebore. I have done some research and technically both chambers are physically the same and therefore rated the same.

Yeah I understand but I've been talking about the 223 and thought others were too. At the time I built this rifle I didn't know what bullet I was going to run. Assumed 75's. Discovered the 88 accidentky and loaded it up. I could buy a reamer and throat it or just get another barrel. Based on the math the 24 should be close to 2800. Is that 150 fps worth it? For now probably not but starting over definitely

I'm not sure you would gain much velocity. Maybe 100 fps... I'm not sure.

Where are people getting AI data? I'm thinking about going that route. Just picked up one of those credit cards with a $300 bonus I'll probably be buying the barrel soon.

This one might be of benefit to you if you are looking for Ackley loading information. I started this thread over on Snipers hide back in 2017.

I really appreciate everyone's help! I am settling on 75 and 80 eldm. It seems like a better fit and I don't want to build around an 88 and then realize I can get the velocity to justify it. I think I will do a 223 Wylde chamber with a custom freebore such that I'm touching the lands with an 80 eldm with the botail/shank junction lined up with the neck shoulder junction so that the neck surface has full contact. I believe the coal will be below 2.6". The 88s are probably better suited for a barrel burner makes more sense to just use a 6.5 creed.

Still finalizing but here is a pic of last three groups shot. Mines an AI so speed will differ but I'm not pushing it at all just looking for accuracy.
Pic is 5 @100. 80 grain ELDX 2.512 OAL
Varget 24.5 2760 avg, 25 2820 avg, 25.5 2900 avg
I think you're gonna like your set up. Good luck and let's see it when it's done.

I have a new project but was hoping to get input from folks who have maybe tried this. Planned specs:

20" 223 Remington Match chamber
Freebore .20 thousands of a 223 with 88 eldm load to 2.5-2.55"
1:7 twist
I will be using magazines that allow for 2.6" coal

The reason I want to build this is:
1. Ridiculous barrel life
2. I have piles of 223 brass
3. I don't have piles of 22 arc brass
4. I don't have a bolt that will work with 22 arc
5. I want to shoot thousands of rounds out of this gun and use it to show my kids how to shoot long range
6. Prairie dogs
7. Coyotes
I'm hoping to get 2700-2800 fps with the 88eldms using cfe 223.

I am curious if anyone has done this. I want to make sure I'm not doing something silly. I'll probably call this the 223 Super Remington.
Check with Nez - "bamban" he has been shooting and building .223 AR for many years for a lot of competition shooters. We have several Barrels & Uppers that Nez recommended. Just one of a dozen projects we are still working on.
Nez is a wealth of knowledge on the .223 long distance!

Loaded some 80s out to a coal of ~2.57 this where I get full contact with the shank and neck. I have a 223 Wylde AR 15 and I seated a bullet using the gun and got a coal of 2.556. I'm thinking I'll just get a 223 Wylde chamber at this point.

What length is your barrel?

My 223 wylde bolt gun that I mentioned earlier in this thread sped up a little last weekend. 10 shot average was 2909 with the 75 eldm out of a 20" barrel with Benchmark.
