Lightweight 6.5 PRC Build

Yes it's the original Kimber Montana stock.
That should be a great hunting rifle I had a Kimber 8400 with a #2 Douglas in 300 WSM. It was a joy to carry in rough country. I also had a 4.5-14 Leupold on mine. It was a rock solid hunter out to around 500-600 yards. I did notice mine took 60 inch pounds of torque on the stock to keep it right. That 6.5 should have less recoil snap than the 300 did. My 6.5 PRC has really mild recoil.

Here's my latest build from Gunsmith Gary Flachs Bench,

I wanted a lightweight 6.5 PRC that I could take sheep/deer hunting and as usual Gary didn't disappoint, we started with a Kimber Montana 8400 (wsm donor) it has a Titanium Bolt Handle and Trigger Guard, he trued and squared the action, lightened the trigger to 2.5lbs, and added a 23" #1 contour Fluted Benchmark 1-8 twist barrel,

Brown Gunkote on all metal surfaces and a beige coloured paint on the stock with multi coloured splatter and a palm swell added, on its own it weighs 5lbs 12.5oz, so with Talleys and a Leupold should come in at 6.75lbs

Im waiting for a Leupold 4.5-14x40 30mm ZL-CDS to come in the mail put on it, so in the mean time I mounted a Zeiss 4-16x44 in some Talleys to get it shooting at the range.

What length of barrel did you go with? On Friday I ordered a Benchmark #3 fluted 26" .284/7mm. I wanted a #2 but I was talked out of it, Im making a call on Monday, I still want a lighter weight barrel!

thanks

Thats sounds about perfect in my my mind.....you'll be very happy with that contour and combination.

Im getting 3030 FPS with 160gr Accubonds, Fed 210M primers and 60.5grs of R26.

I am waiting on a 280ai Jon Beanland Build with an unfluted Bartlein 24" 2b contour. Agonized about the barrel contour decision. With an Edge fill McM Hunter Stock, guessing it comes in around 7lbs.

The true CRF is going to make that a great feeding rifle. I have owned 3 push feed 280ai's. The 40 degree shoulder seems to cause rough feeding. I am using a Bighorn Sr3 for this build. It is supposedly a CRF action but nothing like the control of a pre64 70.

Over the years I have picked up quite a few pre64's , they've just been sitting around, sure hope they feed the Ackley case? I could have gone with a lighter receiver but I like the old pre64 mod70's
