Lighter recoil

Since they got you covered on the rifle side, I highly suggest to get that shoulder/rotator cuff problem, it's going to get worst unless you take care of it. Now the .308 is bothering you, next whatever caliber you step down to well also bother you.

I had a rotator cuff surgery in June 2012 >>> http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f22/had-shoulder-surgery-93972/ and it turned out great.

Recoil was not not an issue with my rotator cuff problem ... I have problem/pain with overhead range of motion, i.e., spiking a volleyball or throwing a tennis ball.

In short, find out what's causing the pain and have it fix.

Good luck!

Handirifle is not the op, I don't think the op is having shoulder problems other than he is recoil sesitive. On that note I will say this I had rotorcuf surgery 2 years ago this month my shoulder is great only bad thing that was the first year in 35years I never made it to the whitetail woods. I couldn't even lift my 44mag let alone shoot a bow everything good now though.

Rick,
Perhaps you might look into a rebarrel job on your .308 Win to a .250-3000 or as it's called the .250 Savage. It's just great for white tail at the range you've indicated and them some. Recoil is zip, and it's a super double duty cartridge for other hunting.
Good luck

I never said Handirifle is the OP. You might want to re-read the OP's post below again ...

I hunt mainly whitetail in eastern North Carolina, and I am currently using a 308 win in a Remington model 700 bolt. Most shot ranges 75-150 yards, some do stretch to 250ish. I am starting to get older and the 308 is starting to hurt when I shoot it.(probably rotor cuff problem). Would the 260 be a viable solution to reducing the recoil without hurting the capability to kill deer at the stated ranges?

My point is to get the medical problem taken care of.

I to am an east NC hunter. Here is the cheapest fix for your problem. 46 grs IMR 4895, WW case, CCI BR2 primer 125 Nosler ballistic tip. Will do between 2900 and 3000 fps depending on barrel and length and had MUCH LESS recoil than a 150 gr load. Kills deer like lighten struck them. Otherwise get you a 25-06. Almost NO RECOIL and it is the deer killingest round that I have ever squeezed a trigger on.

Feenix, my bad I had forgotten he said it might be a rotator cuff, I agree with you get it fixed. worst surgery I have ever had but worth it in long run.

No problem! Glad to hear your surgery went well too. My strength in pulling is OK but I am slowly building strength in pushing. Right now I can only do 3 sets of 50 lbs on incline press ... I think I can do more but will be take it slow and cautious to not re-injure it. Other than that my range of motion and pain is all gone.

My bow is set at 62 lbs and I can pull it without any problem.:D

Keep the rifle, but put a suppressor on it (if your state allows). Get a NFA trust so you don't have to deal with local law enforcement.

Thank you all for your comments.Installed Packmayr recoil pad, reduced the kick to a tolerable level. Scheduled for trip to sports medicine doc mid Jan.
