Lets beat this horse one more time

Do you fly anywhere to Hunt? 7mm ammo can be bought most anywhere and while it might not be your special reload, it will shoot well enough out to 400 yards . Loosing your luggage and ammo is a bummer but even more so if you can't find exotic calibers in foreign countries!

Not to talk you out of another gun, but you already have a 300win, which is more than effecient enough to take elk at 1,000 yards. Sure, a 30-378, 300 RUM, or 338 of some sort might hit harder, but they will all do the job. You could even look into loading the 230's in the 300win, although the 215's are probably better suited for it. Just something to think about...

I agree that a 300 win mag is good and plenty for elk out to 1000... so a couple years ago I got a full custom 300 with the goal of having just one hunt-everything long range rifle. It's plenty accurate, light enough to carry anywhere .... but ... it's just not a 338. As much as I know a 300 win mag is enough for elk, i just wanted a big boomer 338. I finally gave in and now have a custom 338 RUM on order. My point is that it may not be practical, but sometimes you just gotta have fun... get what you want! gun)

I've been shooting a Wby 30-378 for the past five seasons....finally shot it out and decided to re-barrel to a 338 lapua because I too have a very accurate 300 WM. I shot with a lot of guys who had A 300 ultra's and the closest they could come to me with a 29" tube was -100fps with equal bullet weights against my factory Wby accumark with a 26" tube.

The Wby is a hammer for sure but the lapua will beat it when you get way out there......if your interested I have a bunch of brass, dies and loaded ammo for sale in the classified section right now.

This is Ironic I'm reading this, I just picked up 2 Brown Precision built rifles on Weatherby actions.
a 30-378 and a 338-378, a friend of a friends estate lead me to the seller. I picked up about 10 custom rifles, and was wondering how much use these chamberings see now days.

any-one interested they are about 8lbs dry. Bores look excellent.

I love the 338 lapua dearly but #1 I always like to be a little different and #2 run the numbers on the 230. Berger target bullet with a .743 bc at 3100fps which I think is possible. 19moa come up for 1000yds with only about 2.4wind at 5mph plus it has 4900ftlb at the muzzle. That is a fricken lazer beam to 1000yds. Run the numbers aginst the berger 300 gr at say 2800 and tell me what yall think. Is it worth a go. If I do I will keep a running post on here of the actual performance

Thats insane. I personally would enjoy reading your first hand experiences with the 30-378.

I have a 30 inch 300 WBY tube that will push the 230 out at 3200. Now, this may well be the worlds fastest 30 cal tube, and I am sure that the PSI is sky hi, but I got 7 firings out of that brass before I tossed them. The Primer pockets were still tight, but the web was starting to swell just enough that they fit tight in one of my three RCBS shell holders. So, I got scared and tossed them because I have TONS of brass. The tube acted normal (2950-3000) with RL 25, my go to powder for all 300 wbys, but RETUMBO and this tube LOVED EACH OTHER!!!

My point is that 3100 should be very do-able with the 30-378 and the right powder.

Just my .02,

Tod

Im seriously on the fence here. I sold the barreled action I had and the stock it was going in. I have a guy with a 30-378 accumark that only has 20 rpundd down range and it already has a base on it. It is priced reasonable too. I also talked to my smith about building another custom in plain old lapua or a 338 lapua improved or 30-338 lapua. For the price difference though I could do a lot of shooting with the 30-378 and probably still get some new binos for my elk hunt. Man. I hate these kind of decisions

I can tell you that I got an honest 3150 from the 230 OTM's from my factory accumark 30-378 using 105gr RETUMBO and FED 215's and this was not at max......this at 4800-5000'' elevation.

I can also tell you that that high 230 OTM BC along with the velocity possible shot inside anything else at less than 1000 yds.

I did a post about the wind bucking ability a couple years ago
http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f17/lets-shoot-wind-new-230gr-bergers-work-85035/

I loved the 30-378 and was planning to re barrel but switched my mind mainly due to barrel life considerations and that I recently built a super accurate 300 WM that will stack both the 230 OTM( when I still had some) and now the 220 Laupa OTM into a ragged hole. I've started shooting more competetion style events and lean more towards barrel life than absolute performance the wby offered.....the main reason is. Ow I'm more into shooting suppressed and I can suppress a 338 Lapua while no one will rate their can (except 50 cal ones) for the 30-378

I'm now shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor, 300 WM and soon to be a 338 Lapua all suppressed

I had great success with the 30-378 but I did have a little trouble getting the 230's to shoot as well as the 180 TTSX Barnes in my particular rifle, my son and I stacked up a ton of game with that rifle and one reason I'm re barreling on that action.

I'm not trying to convince you one way or the other but am happy to answer any questions you may have as I wore out that wby shooting lots of steel and rocks downrange as well as my main hunting rifle for 5 seasons.
