Left Handed Long Range Setup

Has anyone done as the author of that article recommends, getting a Stevens action and putting on their desired barrel, trigger, stock, and other parts? Is it simple enough that anyone can put it together? I just want to make sure if I go that route that all the pieces I buy fit together properly. Can I just thread on a barrel or does a gunsmith need to do that?

I have both a Browning A-bolt 7mm Rem Mag lefty and a Savage 10 FLCPK .308 lefty.

I prefer the 7mm rem mag for hunting as it shoots flatter and hits a little harder. I've taken a moose with it, but it's a nag in my head the whole time using a 20 year old time piece gift from my father bouncing around in boats and banging around in the woods and river rock beds. I shoot MOA out to 300 yards with it regularly at my local range.

However I prefer the Savage .308 for bench work because it has the bull barrel and a bi-pod mounted, it has a little bit nicer trigger (Accu-Trigger) and I put a AAC brake on it (the factory brake was lacking IMO) so I shoot it suppressed too. Really a nice shooting rifle. Hardly any recoil and very little report with the silencer. I've shot a .71" 5 shot group of hand loads at 100 yards.

I have not shot either rifle at great distance, but I'm choosing to start reaching out further with the Savage in .308 over the 7mm rem. I just shoot it better and there is a ton more support for finding the perfect load for the .308

It sounds like you're going down an even better path though and getting an action and building custom from the ground up. Can't go wrong there.

But between those two factory guns, it boils down to this

Savage Pros
Heavier (less recoil)
Easier to mod
Nicer trigger
Less susceptible to cosmetic damage
Double forward sling mount/bi-pod studs

Browning Pros
Smoother action
Shorter bolt handle lift
Lighter (better for carrying all day)
Much prettier
Better factory adjustable brake (B.O.S.S.)

So would my best bet be to buy a lefty action and then get a good barrel, stock, etc and go that route? Where could I find just a lefty action and trigger?

I love the idea of building up a rifle, whether its a Rem700, or even a Savage. But we are 5 months away from our hunting seasons across the west. Be sure you have a rig now, to get practice, work up loads, and get in the country to scout. Always keep your eyes and ears open for the deals on rifles when they come up. Left hand rifles don't come up for sale very often. When they do, be ready to jump. Builds take a lot of time and thought, after you have the action. Gunsmiths take 4-8 months or longer. It could take a while to get a barrel to install your self. The Savage is the easiest left hand rifle to pick up quik. They are mud fence ugly, but are great hunting tools out of the box. And they cost less than most other rifles available. If you are hunting this year, be sure you have shooter now.

it'll be a savage, as the stevens 200 was never made lefty to my knowledge....

Tikka also makes a good off the shelf rifle that doesn't need a lot of mods and they have lh stainless. I've got three rem 700 lh rifles and all are good rifles, but my browning a-bolt lh and my tikka lh will keep up with the rem 700's I have without any trouble at all.
If you are set on a lh rem in 7rem, both the sps and cdl are currently made by remmy in lh.

I just talk to someone that confirmed that the Stevens 200 was never made in a left-handed action. I want a stainless steel action and Browning doesn't make them so I am leaning towards Remington. Honestly I am struggling to find anything in a lefty, getting very frustrated.

I looked just yesterday on Gallery of Guns, and they had on hand 2- savage package rifles in 7mag. I used them to buy a left hand Savage in .223 last year and was very happy. Also seen a left hand stainless Rem.700 in I think a 7mag in the guns for sale section on this website.

Sorry Blueman, the rifle I seen on this site was a 30-06. Still a beautiful rifle, and a very effective choice for deer.

No problem, thanks for all the help everyone. Yes I did get ahold of Jim. He told me they never made a lefty in the Stevens 200, also said you can't buy a lefty savage action right now either. Looks like I'm going to have to but a complete gun. The trouble is still finding one, the hunt continues.

They (browning) say for the 7rem 2014 was last year of catalogue, so you may be able to find one yet if you look a bit.

Tikka T3 Lite Stainless-- these guys also make a ss lefty 7rem...

you aren't going to get a current production remmy in a ss action; they were stopped a few years ago. sps and cdl are your current choices. I want another lh lss 300win myself (sold mine for earnest $ when I bought a house), but that's for another thread and another day.
