Labradar help

The only way I ever got the Labradar acoustic trigger to work with a can was to put it a few inches to the side of the bullet path and about 4 ft in front of the muzzle. Just because Joe and Bill have a Labradar that works a certain way does not mean that yours will. Mine won't read any bullet smaller than about 75gr in .224 and mine reads velocity about 10fps faster than correct with more ES than my magnetospeed reads.
I agree with VarmintBob, they are VERY inconsistent. Mine has been back to factory three times and each time they "found the problem". I have set mine up next to and with assistance from an experienced user with same settings as someone who has great luck with theirs and had I have had nothing but problems. I can't tell you how many rounds of ammo I have wasted trying to get mine to work properly. I have bought the microphone and inertia trigger, all have advantages and disadvantages..
I tried without luck to get them to replace mine, it is sitting on a shelf in my loading room and I get it out about once a year, finally get disgusted and put it up again.
As stated I have a couple of friends that have great luck with theirs and one other friend who has about same terrible luck as me, so among my group it's about 50/50 on the LabRadar lottery.

This thread is like reviews on any product you buy. 50% love it and 50% have problems. I guess I'll roll the dice. I needed one unit and didn't want two. I needed one for pistols and rifles as well as archery gear. Seems like it will fill the bill for all. My Magnetospeed wouldn't do two of the three. I'll stay optimistic and take the positive 50% reviews.

That's the spirit! 👍

My Labradar was very inconsistent in being able to pick up the bullet. I played around with its position for each rifle that I have, and it varied from 3 feet in front of the muzzle to 3 feet behind. Once I established the correct position for each rifle it has worked very consistently.

So just from 90% of my research and responses here, it's more of an issue of positioning than actually the detection or lack of the report of the rifle. Most people have been able to readjust the unit (aim more accurately) to achieve the picking up of shots easier. Lots of good info so far and appreciate it.

I've had mine for a little over a year. My opinions:

  1. Get the Piet trigger. It will save you headaches, especially if shooting suppressed. You can set the unit wherever you want to and not worry about positioning properly to pick up shots. At my club our shooting tables are not long enough to set the LR up and place the muzzle properly, especially with longer barrels.
  2. I use the LR tabletop tripod and it works fine.
  3. I bought a picatinny rail adapter off eBay and a $20 red dot off Amazon for aiming.
  4. Use your phone/iPad for setting up shot series, arm/disarm, etc….using the phone/tablet allows you to input specific data for each string to use later. Examples below: I have cartridge/bullet/powder data showing and then I can input atmospheric data and specific notes even for each round fired.

  6. Get an external battery.
  7. After running it in this configuration for a year, I will never return to a shoot through style chrono. Magnetospeed was never even a consideration for me for multiple reasons.

Wow. I was considering buying a Labradar, but after reading various forums about all these problems and the additional 100s-of-dollars in possible solutions, I'll pass. By the time you buy the Labradar and then all the additional fixes, it will cost about a $1000. Not worth the cost or aggrivation to me.

I paid $500 for mine a couple of years ago or so, after $50 off and an additional discount. The current price direct from LabRadar is $625.

JKL trigger $35
Home made quadpod $18
Harbor Freight Apache 4800 case $50
2 Battery packs $50

I've heard way too many great reviews on this Doppler unit to walk away. Over half have said the trigger isn't necessary and they all need a tripod. I think most would be passing up a very good maybe the best Chrono a available today by letting a few bad reviews steer them.

I'll have well under 800 in my set up and I paid 625.00 for the unit. Tripod, case, trigger and battery is what I've added. Remember, it's 2023 almost not 2020 anymore. Everything is much pricier today than ever.

The unit did not come with a stand or plate. I have several tripods but curious if a table top tripod is best since the unit sits so close to the rifle ?
I put mine on a primos shooting stick, the trigger activated shooting stick/tripod. Very easy to get it leveled and aimed. I put a small piece of metallic tubing in the V on top of the unit to help with the aiming, if others have a better system for aiming I'd like to learn about it.

I shoot off concrete bench pads. Pretty big and can place the unit next to the rifle on the pad. Kinda wanted a bench top tripod. Thanks for the response.

Thanks, that's what I figured, close to $1000 depending on how much you pay for all the fixes and frustrations. That $800 is closer to $1000, than it is to much cheaper alternate chrono options, a couple I already own to measure rifles, pistols and arrows. Think I'll pass.
