Is there such a thing as, "too much scope"?

Scope moves in the rings or the base is moving, they have proven this. On heavy scopes, I epoxy the base right to the receiver and may tap the screws to 8-40 on non-epoxied bases.

It is wise to spend good money on bases and rings with hard kickers and heavy scopes because stuff does move around!

We don't use heavy scopes (Leupold's) as our long range shooting is rather short.

However, we've tapped to larger screws, Blue Loctite all base and ring screws, as well as Blue Loctite in the saddles for the scope. We want no movement of our scopes! memtb

Never leave the bench after shooting with the scope set on its higher powers! Turn it all the way down. If you need more power in the field you will always have more time to turn the power UP, than if you need to turn it down. Always.

Lots of animals have been lost by this simple mistake.
I fell victim, to my Stupidity on this one. On a drive none the less. I was sitting in a stand over a field earlier. Scanning the woods on the other side. Still not sure how I forgot to turn it down. lol

Struggling with this for an AR10 build. IMO, the 5-25x56 ATACR (C555) is the best scope for the money. Using one on my 338 Lapua, I don't believe or can find another scope that checks all of my boxes. However, it will be completely over-scoped. Wishing/hoping they would make a 4-20 ATACR in SFP. After talking with my NF contact, there is no talks of it.

memtb, that is a good one, "We don't use heavy scopes…..as our long-range shooting is rather short".

Some of the latest and greatest scopes coming out now have some serious heft to them.

I had a 7 STW Sendeo size tube, action in a Rem Laminate stock, and a great muzzle break on it. The scope kept moving back in the rings. The scope went fuzzy on me, sent it back to Burris with their FOREVER warranty. They said the scope was ruined as a lens was cracked, the muzzle blast was pretty good on this round and the scope moving in the rings did the damage. I surmise that the concussion broke the lens? Burris exchanged the Black Diamond with their best scope on the market, and I am very happy.

I went to using some darn good rings and bases.

Been hunting 50 years.Done all the mistakes at least twice. Hunting more open mule country two seasons ago.Been sizing bucks up at distance. Gray ,FIRST light, half asleep. There a toad whitetail standing in front of me, was a high wind day, like 45 mph.I spent first half my life whitetail hunting, threw up on deer and was blown up off target off hand, got back on and touched off the 338NM.Off he runs wide open and I can't get on him as I've left my scope ramped up towards 20x.Yeh I know better, was on the end of a week hunting and missed Thanksgiving with my family.Well at least it was only about a 160 rat deer

I've had the experience with a 6-24 and the deer popped out at a literal 20 feet from me. All you see is fur.

Then there is the coyote at 1,200 yards.

So for my hunting rifles i prefer 3-4X on the low end.
Most of my scopes now are 4-16x.

Then there is my short range (400 yards and under) benchrest scope.
Sightron SIII 10-50X60 LRTD.
With .125" adjustments.
My hunting scope is 4x16 and my target scope is 5x25. I do use a 1x8 on one of my ar15's and an Eotech on the other. Use a 3x9 on my target 22lr but I'm going to change it. It is more magnification than I really need.

Good point!

We actually shoot our hunting rifles very little. Not only do they consume copious quantities of powder, but the Barnes bullets aren't cheap either. And, as we don't do brakes…..we get punched a bit hard . Her's….40 ft/lbs, mine 60 ft/lbs. I'm not certain which is more painful….the cost or the punch! 😂 memtb

Yup! I tap all my scopes to 8/40. Even if they don't like it. 😃

It will not be long before a scope price will equal 6 full-grown cows.
I don't know about that. Look at the choices we have these days. And the difference in prices. I think it's harder to sort through the market & find the right scope for a certain price point. To many options, IMO. I am not one to spend $2,000.00 on a scope. Not within my financial realm. I have spent $1500.00 on one, once. Which I have since regretted. After seeing, if I would have waited about six months. I could have got the same scope for $500.00 (sale) from the same manufacturer. I have since not bought another scope from them. I like the Athlons, but their weight is a factor when hunting. I never tried the Burris. Looked at them once. A long time ago when they were really cheap. And thought to myself they were to cheap to be of a quality scope. I have since learned I was wrong AGAIN. Scopes is one thing I hate shopping for. I always seem to be the loser. Whether it's the price or features. And to make matters worst. When I do find one, I like for the price. And after considerable usage. I refer back to get another, only to find, Discontinued. Just my experience with scopes. Rant over, sorry.
