Is there something undesirable about imr 4831?

I use IMR 4831 in 25-06, 280, 6.5-06 and it's been solid out to 600 yds. I never had any issues with temp sensitive but I use it in similar temps during hunting season. Really the slight temp change fps doesn't do much to vital zone accuracy inside 500 yards. it's not the powder I would use for 600 yds or more as the change in fps will start to make a difference

IMR 4831 is listed as 1.10 fps per degree while H4831 is 0.36 but the increase isn't linear when you get to about the mid 80F range then powders can really spike fast. The Hodgdon extreme series don't spike like that for me in our desert heat.
Wedgy: that very interesting info! Do you have the sensitivity for WC844? Or know where I can find it?

Excellent Question. I have only used H 4831 and H 4831SC. They gave me the best groups in the 270 Win shooting 130 Grn Nosler ballistics tips,, in my Ultralight rifle. I also like it a lot for my 270 Weatherby Mag using the 150 Grn ABLR's. I do own IMR 4831, but never used it. My 270 Weather Mag really like IMR 4350 when shooting the 130 Grn ballistic tips. So in summary, for deer hunting , my 270 Win likes 59.5 grns of H 4831 when shooting 130 Grn. bullets at temps of 28 to 45 degrees, and my 270 Weatherby Mag likes IMR 4350 when shooting the same 130 Grn bullet , in the same temp range. I have no Idea why!! I just accept it . I'm hoping to learn a bunch on this thread.

It's funny Bruce Hodgdon got his start with selling 4831 powder, But many don't know that it was IMR 4831 that he was selling. It was military surplus pull down powder, If I remember correctly it was IMR 4831 pulled down from 20mm Vulcan rounds. Anyway, I'm not sure when he started selling H4831 but it's been a long time now and the load data is definitely different between the 2 powders, About the only similarity is burn rates. And H4831 is made in Australia.

Best I can do with phone, but here is side by side H4831 and IMR4831 you can see the coating on the H and the hole in the IMR

Ha! And a lot of IMR powder is made in Canada by DuPont!

I was doing some initial loads for a new rifle today. Loading AB 160's in 280AI. I was using the Nosler manual to load pressure test loads in 1 grn. increments. Started with H4831SC and then loaded some IMR4831. Also finished up a pound of IMR4350 and will run H4350 once confirm the loads. We will see what the results are when I get to the range. No worries right now about pressure spikes due to high temps outside. The manual shows best velocity with IMR4831.
I would like to hear back on what you found out with your loads.

Dupont was always who made IMR powder, But If I remember it was made in West Virginia a long time ago, And IMR stands for "Improved Military Rifle" powder
Yeah. I didn't know for sure if there was any other countries where they were, it's a big international company that makes a lot more than gunpowder. But I do know they make a ton of it here which adds insult to injury that it's so dang hard to get our hands on it haha (not really, I know it's hard for EVERYONE these days)

Ive tested quite a bit with 4166, 4451, and some 4955. What i learned was they pressure out suddenly and always, just before that, the groups tightened up. As odd as it may sound. A shame the enduron line was dropped. 4166 was one of my favorite powders. May go back to a few imr powders.

Yes I'm sad about that too. Big fan of 7977 and 8133, and they didn't seem so abruptly spiky as the faster ones
Enduron powders are no more? Not that I had great results with them but have some to use up.

While the H series has always been slightly less temp sensitive, over the decades, I have burned a LOT of IMR 4831. I have a couple of 8# jugs and 1# cans on my shelves, and still use it in 243, 6mmRem, 25-06, 270, 30-06, etc. While it isn't used as much today as a few others, it still works, and in a couple of rifles and loads, it still gives me the tightest groups and good vels. In a couple of my 25-06's, it still gives me the best velocity with a couple of "old school" bullets/loads from 4 decades ago.
