Is the 6.5 Creedmoor the best do it all cartridge ever

I heard Chevy is renaming the Camero to the Creedmoor

The CM isn't the rage in BRView attachment 86394
This article in PRB was published February 2017 for reference before lapua came out with brass for the creedmoor.

I checked on this and the only delta I would want to highlight, and was also highlighted in the article, was where the author stated that he expects a shift of some shooters to go to the creedmoor now that lapua is making brass for it.

What you also don't see in your chart or this article is any 6.5x 55 Swede, 6.5x284, 264 win mag, 26 nosler or 6.5 weatherby being shot. So you are comparing a competition which has specific demands to a hunting cartridge. I bought mine in a custom pierce action and built by pierce to practice with and use as a backup rifle to my larger hunting rifle. It's just funny how everyone on both sides presents this cartridge. Best thing ever or a total useless addition to the industry. Sounds like politics to me. With lapua brass it's a pretty good cartridge for what it's intended for.

You're obviously missing the point. Being a pro-gun or like guns does not warrant hatred to a cartridge or its strong following, no one is forcing anybody to like it, it's really that simple. There's nothing backwards about it.

I've said over and over I don't hate the cartridge...Just the annoying supporters.

Perspective... Everyone has their favorite football team... You hate on the other rivals because they're not you favorite. You rip on your friends if they pull for the other team. But in the end, regardless of outcome of the game, you buy them a beer, shake their hand, tell them good game, and you go on about having a good time. But there are those fans (even on your side of the field) that are so annoying you just shake your head and disassociate yourself from them, because they make everyone who pulls for your team look like a jackass... It's the same thing, different media, different platform.

People take this crap too seriously! Folks need to double-back and realize, it's just a **** cartridge, and it's just some friendly ribbing. There's no need to get ****ed off over someone joking on people who support your team. And hell, at some point, it's even warranted to joke on those a-holes who make YOUR team look bad. You have to accept it that it's a part of life.

We're all adults, time to act like it, and realize that there are no such thing as participation trophies, and life has clear "winners" and "losers". People need to find their sense or humor again, and stop getting so ****y about everything. It's no different than those social justice warriors who find a new way to be offended by EVERYTHING you say.

As for that meme, it's completely true.

I agree with acting like an adult, we are responsible for our own actions and the consequences associated with it, jokingly or not.

Not me, I have better things to do than watch football. Like predator hunting and ice fishing. Hate watching football, I don't even watch the super bowl. But I get your point. Like JE said there is NO one best cartridge for everything. Not the creed or 300 win or the 308. Good news is we are lucky to have almost endless options, from mild to wild to fit all of our wants and needs. At least in the good ol' USA!

With all the talk about 6.5s I decided that I needed to know more about there capabilities and there ranking. This was just an exercise to place them in some kind of order. Velocity seems to be one of the most Important measures of cartridge performance now days, so that Is what I concentrated on.

These results are by no means the LAST WORD, but gives a good perspective of comparison of the different cartridges in 6.5 caliber.

All numbers are based on the highest velocity within SAMME pressures in loading and same weight bullets for comparison. I realize that some will challenge these velocities because they can load hotter and get more velocity. But comparing apples to apples is the most consistent method in my opinion.

140 grain bullet weights were chosen because all but one cartridge listed the use of 140s and only one did not (The 6,5 Grendel).

Here are the results with no bias of mine (The one that I presently own is in the middle of the pack).

6.5 Grendel (123 grain)= 2508 ft/sec.

(Everything else will use 140 grain bullets for comparison using listed velocities in order of velocities.
6.5 Carcano = 2192 ft/sec
6.5 x 50 Jap = 2414 ft/sec
6.5 mm BR = 2421 ft/sec
6.5 Swedish = 2684 ft/sec
6.5 Creedmoor = 2736 ft/sec
260 (6.5) Rem = 2755 ft/sec
6.5x47 Lapua = 2770 ft/sec
6.5-06 ---------= 2848 ft/sec
6.5x284 ------=2895 ft/sec
6.5 Rem Mag = 2943 ft/sec
264 (6.5) win mag = 3026 ft/sec
26 (6.5) Nosler = 3188 ft/sec
6.5 x 300 Weatherby =3269 ft/sec.

These are most of the current 6.5s and all I could find reliable data on for comparison. Some were a surprise But were modern cartridges with higher design pressures and the 140 grain bullets were not the best performer in some, Pressures varied based on design requirements and age of the cartridge, but again it was for comparison.

This will probably start a firestorm of differences of opinions, But I learned something from it so that's what counts for me.

Good job of laying it out.

good old MAGNUMS.
But why would l want any of these when l can shoot a 7mmRM 140GR bullet faster than all these things can ? and l can shoot heavyer bullets too. l just dont get the hype. l could understand if some people and children think the 7mag has too much recoil for them. but aside of that l just think it aint no magical round. considering what this thread is about, l wouldnt want to choose a 6.5mm for my only gun. because of where l live, l do only have 1 gun, and that is the 7mmRM. most of my mates have 300WM and 30-06s. but 6.5mm creedmoor ? really ? for your only gun do it all ? no thanks.
If I were a "one gun guy" I'd probably go with the 300wm but thankfully that will never be a consideration.

For those of us that shoot a lot economy generally plays a part and you can shoot the CM, .260, or 6.5L for about half what you can the 7RM or 300wm.

You'd also have to work real hard to ever shoot a barrel out on one of the middle to lower velocity 6.5's.

Keep in mind too that the old 6.5 Swede has successfully taken pretty much every large game species in the world including most if not all of Africa's biggest and baddest.

In the hands of a competent shooter and particularly handloader they are just a whole lot of fun and more than enough to get the job done 99% of the time.

I had always been a bit skeptical of the "6.5 magic" but between my .260's and.264wm and three years of piling up dead critters with them by the truckload I'm about convinced.

Pro football is a joke. I haven't watched pro ball in nearly 20 years, when I realized that most of them were just overpaid whiney future convicts. Some years I watch the Super Bowl, if I'm somewhere and it's on, but most years I don't. I only watch college football.

You and JE are right about the cartridges, we are very lucky to have so many good options. And also that there's not "one ring to rule them all", no matter how hard someone wants it to be. Fact of life is that it just simply doesn't exist. The closest cartridge I can think of to fit the bill would be a close tie between the .260 AI, 7mm-08, and the .280 AI. All 3 can go from light and fast to heavy and long range, and do so with excellent efficiency. And as you can see, while those may be similar in some ways, they're still far apart in the spectrum.

Just seen a question on Facebook:
"Who has a drop chart for 6.5 Creedmoor, 140 ELD to 1000 yards?"

I see the point of "it's the people that annoy me"'.

I'm going to revert back to a earlier post on one of these Creed threads.
These guys do not want to put any work in shooting.
Someone is going to provide a chart that will get the guy close. Then he'll tweak it till it fits. The Creedmoor offers these guys factory ammo and data that will take all the hard work that I personally enjoy out of the equation.
I just don't get people who want all the questions answered without figuring out why the question even come up!
Its rampant in every part of this sport now.
Maybe I'm different, but I will not sleep until a i figure out why I had a question, long after I figured out the answer/solution.
But I also come from a time when any electronic device, even lighted sight pins were prohibited. We had to scout with binoculars and tying thread to small saplings to try and get a general time when the deer moved thru a area. Now in the time of instant answers, guys check their trail cameras (several trail cameras) while they are at work, pattern a big buck thru surveillance, they know he's coming thru at 7:00am so they show up at 6:30, shoot it, then go to the restaurant and bragg they killed the biggest smartest buck in the county! And all the goons will worship him as the greatest hunter of all time. So yea it's the people!!
Merry Christmas!!

Agreed Gohring. Personally, I've never owned a game camera, and never used one on any property i've hunted. I've helped set them up for buddies on their own property, but never used one on my own. I can see the allure of the modern technological crap available at your fingertips... But just like fakebook, and social media have killed off people's social skills and their desire to actually interact with other real human beings, all the electronic crap and technology will kill this sport and hunting, as well. It's what technology does. It destroys the innocence of things that once required skill to achieve and be successful at. Digital dope charts and calculators are cool. I use mine all the time for convenience once I input all my figured data (that I figured out), but I also know how to work-up a dope chart, too, where most of these people these days are wanting the easy way out. I'd love to make those newbies go through a LR shooting course with a .308 Win pushing 168's and 175's like so many of us had to learn with... Without that commercially-purchased confidence, they'd be so lost. And that's why I have such a problem with making everything so easy.

Some of that rings true and tough for me. I do custom ammo for people that is shot out to the usable distance. A bit diff than "Can someone give me a drop chart to 1000y". We actually develop to the particular rifle. We are willing to share all the load data and ballistic data with our customers.

I think what many of the fan boys don't realize is pretty much all the other cartridges can also land a bullet at a 1000y too.

I hear ya! I've only got a couple years under my belt with with my Creedmoor and 26 Nosler but have been hunting and guiding with a 264 WM for over 30 years.....can't even begin to think of how many animals I've killed with it! And watched my Dad take an uncountable number of deer with his since the early 1960s until he passed in '87. 264 WM is an Awesome Cartridge!
