Is a hotdog a sandwich? Seriously!

A protein between two carbs.
My dad sometimes skips the meat! He's an old farmer and avid gardener, there is nothing he loves more than a fresh garden veggie sandwich. I recall many times growing up he'd have the biggest grin on his face eating a sandwich of moms homemade bread, with butter, cucumbers, lettuce, radishes, and tomatoes from the garden with salt and pepper. A farmers sandwich.

Of course, being a cattle and grain operation there was always beef around, he'd typically grill up a steak to make up the difference later that day šŸ˜

But seriouslyā€¦meat or no meat, a fresh toasted tomato sandwich with salt and pepper is a beautiful thing in itself

You're overthinking it man!!!! šŸ¤£

Have been super informative.

I wonder if the hotdogs transcends the common sandwich and is not only not in a subset or type of sandwich, but it is some how superior to sandwiches in general. Like the king of England is somehow a citizen of the country but vastly different. Do you know what I mean? Or maybe its like harry, the red headed royal hasbeen that really has royal blood but has been carelessly cast aside by a general public that thinks itself superior...

A "sandwich" requires two pieces of sliced bread. So, I say NO, a hotdog is not a sandwich. But does it matter? LOL
I Can appreciate your thought here, but then that would disqualify the "submarine" sandwich. Then one thing that this argument has going for it is the fact that the sub sandwich has 'sandwich in its name. I haven't heard anybody call a hotdog a 'hotdogs sandwich'. But again, does that just mean the hotdogs, whether refuring to the sausage or the 'sandwich' version, is called by a singular name?

A Steak does not become a Steak Sandwich until you put a toasted slice of bread under it. There are lots of examples of open faced sandwiches, hot roast beef, hot turkey etc. So a wiener by itself, is a hot dog, put it in bread or a bun, seams like a sandwich to me.šŸ˜ˆ

I worked for a meat packing company a number of years ago. I made hot dogs along with other items. Took 20 plus years before I could eat a hot dog. No opinion on what you should call them. Only know that my memory had to fade considerably before I could look at one.

Okay okay I'll play along!!!!

Upon deep introspection and analysis of the data I believe this is a classic case of "letter of the law vs spirit of the law". Or of the difference between wisdom and knowledge.

The classic example being

"knowledge is knowing that a tomato is technically a fruit. Wisdom is not putting tomatoes in a fruit salad".

I think technically yes absolutely a hot dog is a subset, an individual species, "Frankfurticus Maximus" or "Schnitzelschack Americanus" perhaps of the genus "A. Sandwichii" - it's meat in between bun/bread product, technically a sandwich. Letter of the law sandwich. Knowledge sandwich.

But I argue that in the spirit of the law and wisdom and common senseā€¦

A HOT DOG IS NOT A SANDWICH.

You could argue it is and use a dictionary and technicalities and letter of the law reasoning and knowledge divorced from reasonā€¦..

But the REAL PROOF is in your heart, your gut reaction, your intrinsic knowledge that you don't have to convince yourself is true, because you just know it, in your bonesā€¦.the REAL PROOF is that if your friend walked up to you with some hot dogs and said

"Hey man I got us some sandwiches"

Your unthinking and immediate reflex is to say "that ain't a sandwichā€¦.."

Tell me I'm wrong!!!!! šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Sandwich definition in the Oxford dictionary: an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.

Pictures look like a BLT and a Sub.
Therein lies our answer: Hotdog buns are a single piece of bread, not 'two' as in the definition of a sandwich.

Another example is anything served in pita bread.....the pita is but a single piece, so not a sandwich either.

However, one or more hotdogs placed between 2 slices of bread becomes a sandwich by default per the Oxford dictionary....

Those are fighten words. Since when did West Virginia lay claim to the term "hoagie"? That is strictly southeast Pennsylvania and western New Jersey, any place else its just a sub and I haven't had a good hoagie since I left Pa. 48 years ago. Next you'll be telling us pork roll and scrapple originated in West Virginia as well. šŸ˜‰šŸ˜, further, hotdogs are not a sandwich unless they fall on slices of bread.
