IMR 4350 is another. Maybe not the best in one but good in many. There's is not many cartridges that you can't use these powders.
And they perform very good

Not sure what you consider smaller capacity since you mentioned 338 WM but this below has been my experienceMost magnums 338 win mag and 300 win mag eat it up. It's not designed for the smaller capacity or smaller diameter bullets. Large calibers
And then there's smaller yetIt's pretty great in all of the 06 based rounds. 30-06, 270, 25-06
I've heard it's pretty good in the 7-08 with heavier bullets but haven't tried it… yetThat's my go to powder for my .243.
Concur! Maybe not the fastest but sure is accurate and consistent. Will always be in my inventory.IMR 4350 is another. Maybe not the best in one but good in many.
I had good results with 4831 in 3006 and larger. You can't over load it. Even better in the magnums. Not so good at smaller cartridges. There are many better choices. I think it was original for machine gun. Seems like from many years ago as reclaimed powder .In my 06 I use 57 grains of 4831 with the Sierra 180 gr SPBT or the Nosler partition180 gr SPBT same point of impact out of my rifle and accurate just over 1" consistently.. Been using that load for 30 years.. I took that rifle to Africa and shot some plains game with it. Noslers. Its my Go-to load.
IMR 4831 in 338 RUM not a good matchThrow the dang'd stuff away. Back in the "day", all the manuals said 60 gr of 4831 and the 130 gr Sierra was good for the magic 3000 fps plus. It did shoot pretty well, hung around .75 MOA for and harvested may mule deer.
Then I bought the Oehler chrony, the first one with the paper screens. My favorite load was going a bit over 2800 fps. The finding resulted in a major depression.
Since then 4831 and I have had an estranged relation ship. Maybe in one of the larger calibers with a heavy bullet and a case large enough to to hold some powder. I've tried 4831 in a 338 Win and 338 RUM with less than impressive results. 7828ssc seems to out do it in the cartridges I've tried.
Oh, and after thought, don't use light loads of 4831 in anything like a 22-243. The/a secondary/reflected pressure wave makes things come apart. Makes your hand tingle as pieces are spread around the firing line. Was there once as a witness.
