If you could design a cartridge from scratch

If I were to design one from scratch it would a something like a shortened 300 Norma improved necked down to 7mm something that would fit on tikka action/medium length and still have a 40 degree shoulder. No idea how I'd do it or why but I was thinking about this very thing the other night. Wondering how the wildcatters before looked at a Case and said if cut this down and take out the taper and move the shoulder forward it will do X. Always thought that was really cool.

Sorry about just jumping in just saw post referring to a sniper cartridge.I know a lot of people did not like RCC brass . And in the end I'm with you based on them not following through!! But talk about design any cartridge/ parent case not nessary! They had the ability to make any thing you could imagine. And they did , the 2" BMG 375 they built for me is a laser the ultimate long range cartridge with a tons of bullet choices a powdered range between cheytac and 416 Barrett. 150/160+gr And it just fueled my interest in custom cartridges . I have done several neck Downs of existing cartridges and the AI on a few , but to be able to design and see completion of a new case man that's fun . It's great to here all the ideas just wish I had an unlimited supply of cash to fund the research thanks for the great topic!! Mission shooting supplies

220 SWIFTER Exact same everything just a different head stamp. Spend more on internet fantasy claims and some hunt influencer on exaggerated and select info on what it can kill and do. Boom capitalize on ignorance and internet intelligence and you have the newest and best selling cartridge.
Or the 220 WOKE SWIFTER and brass is made from unsold BudLight cans.

I like single shots, prefer rimmed cartridges, but like some modern features.

I started down the road of a 6.5x65 R, and was going to use it to mimic one of @elkaholic Sherman.

Health derailed it.
Sorry to hear about the health issues. Good luck with that!

Question: What single shot actions do you like? I love the lines of the Ruger #1 and the 1885 Winchester High Wall, but they all seem to have drawbacks. What's your favorite?

Darryle,

I have designed several over the years. No two are the same.

My most recent is nothing more than a .338RUM necked to 7mm and using 7RUM brass to gain an extra .100" neck length. After a few firings I started getting inexplicable high pressure. Then I realized the brass needs to be trimmed after EVERY firing. Therefore, I already drew up a plan for a new reamer. It will be nothing more than a .338RUM improved with a 40* shoulder and still use 7RUM brass. This should prevent brass growth. Oh yea, I discovered the reamer I received is about like a standard chamber so the brass grows in diameter and has to be forced back to shape. Before I order the new reamer, I will first purchase a couple hundred 7 RUM brass and measure all of them to find the largest base and have the reamer ground to that size.

Of course this will require custom dies. My present setup is a 7RUM die with .100" turned off the bottom and the edges smoothed.
Whatb did you obtain with your new cartridge that you could not find with all the wildcats we currently have now?
My shooting partner and I have been talking about designing one in 338 caliber with hope of better accuracy and less nlength than a 33xc with added width. Thanks

The bullet you described in the movie is pretty much a 416 Stroker/416 Barrett it sounds like.

I hated to see RCC go away.Their brass was awewsome on how many nreloads to get from them my shooting partner saiid. Why did they go under.

Not exactly sure what happened toRCC they had what appeared to be a new idea and an a great end product how do you screw that up ? They expanded ( big money)and COVID and lack of reloading components kind of all hit same time that's my guess. The cartridge I wanted on for 22/24 months was a 338 no parent case reabated rim (640) base of cartridge 690 to a 674 shoulder with a 35 degree to a long neck ,mag primer I keep thinking some one will up the weight / BC on 338 bullets my bike gripe is that old jeff Robertson said he will make it so I built the gun had a reamer made so I've got a 5,000.00 paper weight now and no dam new fun cartridge to play with. I can't believe that with a good business plan and management this idea can't fly. Hell I'll be the first in line for anew case. But it was fun designing with out any limits ( exciting bolt fade size

My thoughts have been on the use of .458's for AR10's and similar for .338's. Using something similar to a wsm case necked however to achieve 2.830" coal. Getting the .458's 300gr from a 20" with a ME near 5k.

If I were to design a new cartridge? It would probably come out looking a lot like a 270 WSM with a mandatory 1:7.5" twist barrel....but it certainly wouldn't get shortened for some stupid reason....nor would I name it 6.8 Western....

.

This is where "I" would like to take the current cartridge world, for with improved design and materials, maybe, just maybe, we could improve in the mediocre accuracy of the past Accelerator factory loads. Handloading these sabots has helped the rifle loads some, but currently, the straight wall handgun and rifle loads have seen higher improvements.

While this is a 30 cal to .224 sabot with a 50gr at over 5,000fps, the idea of doing similar with a 30 cal to .257 or 6mm, a 338 or 35 cal to .277 or 7mm, etc, etc is where I would like to take things next.

Another cartridge idea comes to mind.

There are at least three iterations of a very similar case that at present is the ultimate .30 caliber magnum.

Long before anyone else was Kirby Allen's .300 raptor. Then a very similar concept on Long Range Only was Jeff Broz's .300 High Country magnum. Now with Peterson making excellent brass for such the easy button would be a .30-33 XC.

My modification in light of all the talk about long necks being useful and considering that out of semi-sane barrel lengths this may still be way past diminishing returns would be to sharpen the shoulder but in a way that actually decreases case volume a tad, pushing it back and resulting in a long neck.

Think of the .22-243 middlestead as a reference point for what I'm talking about.

It's little brother could be a 7mm on the .338 lapua case (again, it's been done) but same thing, shoulder sharpened via pushing back and elongating the neck. Similar to a 7mm-338 Norma improved but again with a longer neck possible being formed from the lapua case.
