So I got a Browning xbolt speed in 6.5 PRC last week with intentions of hunting coyote to mule deer with it. I've mostly decided on a Leupold VX-5 3-15 or Nightforce SHV F1 4-16. This rife may also see some pig hunting and some long range steel plates on occasion. Kinda an almost everything gun. I live in central Missouri so most of my hunting will be 400 or less, except for the antelope/mule deer hunting in Montana. I would like to be able to range and dial, if I want too, and I have another Xbolt in 300wsm for bigger critters if I need it. For those of you who have experience with these scopes, which did you chose and why? I can't decide with no experience with either.

Either one will serve you well for your intended purpose. Don't complicate it unnecessarily; pick one and have fun with it.

If you typically only run one load in your rifle, the Leupold custom dial is pretty handy for range and shoot. If you run a ballistic solver or swap between different loads then either will work.

The VX-5 will have clearer glass but the SHV is first focal plane and being able to have the subtensions in your reticle correct at any magnification is a huge plus.

VX5HD. Those distances don't require a FFP scope. The FFP reticle will only be usable at the higher end magnification. As mentioned, get the CDS dial and dial elevation quickly, hold for wind, or dial. I find the VX5HD windage dial to be spot on. I mark it with a silver sharpie the return to zero. You could easily get away with Kentucky windage where you describe you hunt.

If (like me) you like to use the reticle to hold wind, the SFP will only be correct at full power. For me, FFP is where it's at.
