How many layers of merino wool?

Think of guitar strings. Wool is on the bass. The smallest on a regular guitar is alpaca. It is a natural fiber like wool. Harvested and ready for use.
Be nice to your sister.....real nice. Alpaca products are speedy......but not for fashion. For a reason.
Light.....a few ounces........
Fluffy.......keeps that layer open for insulation.
When wet.......just as insulating and doesn't hold much water.
Soft.......gentle against a woman's skin soft. No chafing
It can be woven into heavy dense clothes too.......
Be nice to your sister.
It is like a work sweater........lanolin still in it. Overly long in length and sleeves. Sleeves past your fingertips. And durable.

Then There is vicuña.....Finer still. You can barely feel a softball sized wad in your hand.

Camel, llama, alpaca, vicuña........and then Guanacos.....illegal to export the animals out of the country

Like wool only so much finer. It works well for an air cushion layer.

In my experience Merino is warmer than synthetic; however, merino seems to hold moisture longer.

In humid climates like Alaska I wear synthetic.

If I am in an area like Colorado where there is low humidity and plan to walk a lot I wear a synthetic base layer and a merino mid layer. My preferred synthetic base layer is Arcteryx SV.

with respect to a mid layer, I would think a mid weight merino would be the most you would want. If you are moving a good bit you might want to shed it.

I think w a nice breathable jacket and puffy for glassing you are squared away…. But we can start a longer thread if you ask about boots

I use light merino for anything that touches skin. Seems to regulate body temp well

As an under layer, it's hard to beat polypropylene long johns, they just don't hold sweat when you're hiking then light merino (Kuiu Ultra merino 145 zip t hoodie), then puffy (Kuiu quixdown) then water/windproof layer. For socks, it's hard to beat the filson over the calf heavy merino wool. For boots it depends on your feet, but mine like Lowa Tibet GTX.

Also +1 on the Big Agnes sleep system. I have Anvil horn and the NeoAir Xtherm Max for backcountry. NeoAir is best r-value to weight that I found.

So my loving wife made me an early season, mid layer, light weight, merino wool, copper infused, (for scent reduction) full zipper, hooded sweater and pant with full thigh length vent zippers. It's the gen 1 version that will be tested shortly. I love it and am very thankful to her. She puts up with a lot of shi¥.
