Yes, Remingtons are too big when new.Oh well I guess it was that way from the Remington factory.

I did notice some grease when I cleaned it. But it's all clean dry an a light film now. Those strikes are pretty light, clean ALL the oil and grease and garbage out of the bolt and I would bet your problem goes away. You said 'new to me' so I am guessing you didn't detail strip and clean the bolt. Lot's of people believe that the bolt and firing pin need lubrication internally and they happen to be dead wrong. A very light coat of very light oil that gets wiped off before assembly is all the firing pin, bolt bore and spring should have on them. It is NOT lubricant, it is corrosion prevention. If the previous owner did what a lot of people did and added oil each time he took it to the range the bolt is likely full of oil and residue.
When I get back from OK on Monday I'll break out the calipers an do just that. Those are definitely light strikes. If that's after both rifles attempted to fire them I'm surprised. I would be getting out the calipers to measure pin extrusion on the bolts. Also checking the ammo itself to confirm it's the correct length from base to shoulder and compare with fired brass from same gun to see if there might be headspace issue.
Doesn't have to do with your issue but first two elk my younger brother shot he let them hear a dry fire click before actually loading a round and then shooting. Of course not on purpose. He said he just wanted to give them a head start. Good luck on your hunt. Hope it works out. When I get back from OK on Monday I'll break out the calipers an do just that.
I'm going to do a single shot check an then it's game on for Russian roulette. It gives the deer better odds anyways.
Talk to Me like a 5th grader lolBTW is that the first time you've had the primer flow with the Remington? The primer itself isn't flattened or showing other signs of pressure. If it happens more than once might need to look at getting the bolt bushed.
