High velocity factory 308 cartridge

Burris makes a 25 moa base for Savage models too.
Yeah, I mentioned that one to him and would have purchased and installed it, but we live about 6 hours apart. He decided to take it to a local gunsmith and have it finished sooner. He got whatever the smith recommended.

Really, he's fine. He has access to 1k yard ranges but one is quite expensive and the other you have to have a 4x4 truck to get to (which he doesn't). He may go once a year with a shooting buddy. His regular range goes to 200 yards. He hadn't re-zeroed after having the 20 moa rail installed, so I took him a few weeks ago to 400 at one of my ranges. He zeroed his scope, took a shot at 200 and then two at 400. His 400 yard shots where dead on and he was done for the day. I think 8 rounds total, haha. He was thrilled though.

That's cool. Yeah if his scope is dead on at the ranges he'll most likely shoot at I'd leave it alone. I think we're only talking about 2 moa to get him to 1k. Ammo could fill that need.

My dad has been lamenting the fact that he saw a 308W box of factory ammo that was labeled as high velocity/high speed but didnt buy it. He had never seen it before and hasn't seen it since.

If I understand him, he's saying it was made by Federal but I don't see anything about it on their website or any other company's. He also says for sure it wasn't Hornady Superformance.

Any guesses on what he saw?
This might it. Remington hypersonic rifle ammunition.

Possibly a dumb question, but the 20 MOA base is mounted the correct direction right?
🤣 🤣 this reminds me I told part of the story wrong!! After getting the 20 moa rail installed he went to the range and zeroed at 100 (but didn't reset the turrets to line up on zero). He wanted a two hundred yard zero so went back out and dialed for 200 and shot, but it was like 9" high or something ridiculous. He was confused, dialed it back to the 100 zero. After he got home he decided to bottom out the turret and see if he had enough elevation to get to 1000. He only gained 10 MOA and was pretty confused so called me. My first question was if the rail had been installed backwards, too.
At the 400 yard range, after shooting and checking how many MOA the turrets had per rotation, I came to the conclusion when he thought he was zeroed at 100, he was exactly one rotation above his zero. It explained everything... and all the sudden he finally understood the concept of, and value of, a zero stop. I had recommended he get a pst gen 2 for this exact reason but he was fixated on that 60x power! He's getting there, just learning a few lessons the hard way. 😉

Boy it sounds like a 30 moa base would be his best bet. I'm pretty sure EGW makes an aluminum one. If a 20 moa base only gave him 10 moa increase then the 30 moa should be the sweet spot.

He did get the full 20. Not keeping track of which rotation he was on made him think he only got 10.

Hmmm...I bought Lehigh defense close quarter bullets from a member here, Not discontinued, just out of stock. Link to ammo below.
They have video of this round hitting a gel block. Table legs end up bent. I have only found a couple of references online of it being used for hunting, Same bullet can be loaded into a 30-06 and I believe a 300 magnum. Well over 3800 fps. About 3500 fps in a 308.

Sorry, the video is a 300 blackout round. Same bullet design, but lower velocity. And they also used ballistic clay. This is lethal even with a poor shot.

Sounds like your Dad and I might be the same vintage. We're both confused lol.
Ive gotten more than a few blanks stares along the way.. ha. He's a very strong people person and technical things or working with his hands isnt his strength.. Understanding the math and visualizing differences between dialing clicks, moa, etc isn't his strong point. He's getting there though! He's a really good shot, too.

I've pushed a lot of 308's that far. My easiest combo to use was 175-178 gr bullets, a 20 MOA rail, and the Burris ring inserts to get a little more come ups out of the scopes. 0.005-0.10" inserts depending on the rifle. - dan
